The words also described the emotions felt by the team as their bus pulled out Friday morning Oct. 29. As the team bus left town with a fire engine escort, every Ladycat knew that this is where they wanted to be. The 1A, 2A Uni'S A tournaments started bright and early on Friday at Utah Valley State College's Mackay Events Center in Orem. Because they were the region champs, the Ladycats had a first round bye and didn't play until the afternoon session. Going into their first game, they were both excited and nervous to.be facing the Cowboys from Grantsville. The Ladycats had defeated the Cowgirls every time they met throughout the season so they knew the team from Grantsville would be hard to beat. At the events center, the Ladycats were finally ahle.to take the floor to warm up and start their journey for a state championship to go along with their region crown. The team had a small, but enthusiastic crowd of student body, parents and cheerleaders yelling encouragement from the stands. The starting six of Becky Dees. Lindsey Crystal, Brittany Padfield, Ashley Stephanie Cummings, Simpson and Natalie Marchant to rumcharged onto the court-readble. The match turned out to be a marathon event as neither team seemed willing to lose. The games went back and forth and then back again. The Cowboys came out strong in the first game and jumped out to an early lead. They had played earlier in the day and seemed to be more comfortable on the court. The Ladycats seemed a bit rusty and unfamiliar with the court. They were able to shake off a slow start and get back into the game, hut the Cowboys were able to hold on to their early lead and took the first The Ladycats weren't game about to concede however, and knew that had to dig deep and play hard. Coach Shauna Woolsicnhulme talked to the troops and they came back with a strong start in the second game. The coach used her starters, as well as the regular sub rotation of Leah Tapp and Natasha Mitchell to take 'the second game 1I-1- 15-1- 2. Urged on by a huge crowd of yelling and screaming parents and student body lead by the cheerleaders, the Ladycats once again found what it took to win. They settled in and played their regular style of smashing kills, strong blocks and monster digs to take the second game 13-The Ladycats entered the third and deciding game focused and ready. Becky Dees had the strong serve going in this game and the Cats were able to build an early six point lead. The Devils just wouldnt quit and came back to tie the game. The lead changed back and forth with both teams making both great plays. The Ladycats were finally able to put together a run of points that seemed to frustrate and confuse their opponent. The Ladycats held together and won the third and deciding The celebration on was game as the team knew they were one step closer to their goal. After a king day of waiting, the moment finally arrived. The championship game was ready to begin against the defending 2A champs, the San Juan Broncos. Both teams were introduced and the referees whistle started the match. The Broncos proved early why they are the champs as they jumped all over the Ladycats to win the first The Ladycats game back game strong in the second game and were determined to give the Broncos a ride. Marchant and Simpson both had good serves going and kept the team in the match. Dees and Tapp were putting down the kiljs and Crystal and Cummings were digging out returns. Padfield and Mitchell were putting the sets in the perfect spots. Even with all of this, the Ladycats weren't able to overcome the experience and confidence of the San Juan team and lost the second 6-1- game Tears 11-1- were abundant as the Ladycats collected their second place trophy. The team was understandably disappointed, but still should no feel that their season was a disappointment. An undefeated region record, a region championship and a second place finish in the state tournament make for a pretty great year. Congratulations to the Ladycats, and thanks for representing our school so well. Ribbon Week Student Writer: Tahnie Moon "Say no to drugs and violence", that was our theme for last week. It was a celebration lead by president of the Governors Youth Council (GYC) Jessica Dewey. It was a week packed with movie assemblies, trivia questions, prizes, and kxs of other "activities! Monday was the day to basically pass out all of the ribbons and pencils to the studentbody and of course the daily trivia question was asked to those who's ribbon numbers were chosen. Also those who pledged to be drug and violence free got a Tootsie Fop! On Wednesday, all the games were taken to the middle school and then back to the high Sschool for Thursday. Friday, the GYC members got the chance to go to the Elementary School and pass out Smarties that said. "Be a smartie, be Subscribe To drug and violence free." They talked to the kids about why it's cool to say no to drugs and w h at to do instead of being violent. I learned a lot of.things this week! I'd like to share some of the trivia questions asked: What Drug kills more people in a year than World War I, .World War 11. and fhq.. Vietnam War combined? The answer is Cigarettes. Did you know that every single day 3.000 kids try tobacco for the first time?
