September 10 1999 The Summit County Bee Page B2 Second Graders Enjoy Learning About The Construction Business The North Summit Second Grade classes started the school year with a Construction Theme. To help them kick off the year, the Ogden Division General Superintendent of Granite Construction Company, a arranged Gary Siddoway, the second graders presentation for by Granite. Gary talked to the children about the construction business and introduced some special visitors Construction Granite from Company. The children learned about safety around constructivn sites from Gill Montoya, Chief Safety Instructor. The Utah Construction Manager of Granite, Jim Keys, instructed the boys and girls about the structure of the company and informed them about the equipment used to build roads. Gary Driffits, Project Manager and Project Engineer, spoke to the children about the planning that goes into the construction business. Joy Carter, a truck driver for the company, talked about her work and brought a big transfer truck with an attached trailer for the children to see. The children enjoyed the presentation as well as the signs, the big transfer truck, the pencils, erasers, sharpeners, rulers, crayons, and coloring book about safty at construe- - Cheerleaders Freshmen and Drill Defeated By Team Perform 3-Trojans tion sites. The children also looked great in their Granite Construction hard hats. The Granite officials helped the children see how many jobs or occupations are available in the construction business and helped them realize how important it is to do well in school. After the presentation the children enjoyed a construction day activity. The younger set were participants of a mini-dri- ll team clinic and enjoyed being with the older girls" as they smiled and performed for family and friends. It was fun to see such a friendly group of High School Youth help with the young students, who tried so hard to be like their idols. Following their visit to the Elementary School, Granite Construction officials also visited the seventh grade students at the middle school The seventh graders eqjoyed seeing the huge transfer truck and learning about this 75 year old construction company that offers jobs in almost every career area you can think of. Thanks again, Granite Construction Company. Freshmen Lady Braves Schooled By Trojans N.S. Goes Down To Morgan Student Writer Student Writer Lisa Ferry Wednesday, Sept. 1, got the freshmen Lady Braves hustling to keep up with the experienced Morgan Trojans. The Trojans controlled the first two matches, scoring 15 to 0 until a mighty Lady Brave scored and another lady again. The ending score was: 15 Trojans Braves 2. The ladies played a very competitive game. We know they'll keep on hustling and playing hard. 1ler J. Rowser The North Summit Braves were upset by the Morgan Trojans on Friday, Sept. 3. The Braves wanted to win their opening home game, but the Trojans were just too much for North Summit. The Braves took a big blow at the end of the first quarter of the game when starting running back Landon Judd suffered a neck injury. He was taken by ambulance to assess his injuries. Landon is improving and hopes to be back on the field before long. The Braves had several standout defensive plays, two of which were interceptions by Kollin Garfield. Although the offense, did not score, one touchdown was made by Andy Carlsen and called back on a penalty. The offense had several good efforts but were slowed by penalties and mistakes. The funds from this evening will go to purchase additional items for the Schools to Careers Store. NSMS Olympic Update Description of Our First Event Student Writer: Esmeralda Patino The North Summit Middle School is looking forward to making the 2002 Winter Olympic games as exciting as possible, mostly because many of the events will be at Summit County. In anticipation of the 2002 Winter Olympic games, the NSMS is celebrating with our own Olympic games throughout this school year. During the year long program, there will be assemblies, career fairs, fieldtrips centered around the Olympics. There will be monthly skills as well as activities. ' Students were on teams that put from a countries different represent around the world. These teams will compete in different events such as reading, sports, academic events, and service event. Our first event yvas on Wednesday Sept. 8, as it Olympic Door Design Each team decorated a door with information about their country. These teams had one hour to put together a door. Doors were judged on the following: group participation, neatness, content, creativity, and completion. Winners will be announced the following morning during first hour. Each member of the team will participate in one of the following: 1) Mag 2) Map 3) Olympic Statistics on the country 4) Information about the country 5) Door layout 6) Different information about the country Ihe winning teams will get the following points on totals: 20 points - gold medal 15 points- - silver medal 10 points- - bronze medal the rest will receive 3 points each.
