Previous studies have shown that the risk of sudden cardiac death is sometimes increased acduring bouts of tivity. Whether regular participation in moderate-intensit- y activities can confer overall protection from sudden cardiac death is therefore an important public health issue. According to the American Heart Association, sudden cardiac arrest strikes approximately 1,000 adults a day in the United States. Nearly 250,000 people die yearly from sudden cardiac arrest Lynn Smaha, M.D., Ph.D., incoming president of the American high-intensi- ty Subscribe Vo Vhe 'Bee! cm Reasonablejiates 158 West 200 South Kamas,UT GSDGMM) WAIN ALLEN, M.D. JEANETTE VERNON, RN PA-SALLY SIIENK'FUEGI, FNP tit me. Heart Association, says that the study findings support the AHAs position that moderate-intensit- y physical activity reduces risk for heart disease. He adds: The study strengthens previous research findings showing that the heart benefits from regular, moderate exercise such as walking. Vigorous exercise is not required to reduce risk for heart disease. The AHA has consistently cautioned the public that physical inactivity is a risk factor for heart disease. In 1995, the A!L identified physical inactivity to be one of the major risk factors for heart disease. Other major risk factors include cigarette smoking, high blood levels of cholesterol, high blood pressure, and obesity. The AHA recommends performing 30 minutes of vigorous activity, 3 to 4 days each week, at 50 to 75 percent of maximum heart rate. physical activities for 30 minutes on most days also provide some benefits. Moderate-intensit- y About 22 percent of American adults report regular, sustained physical activity of any intensity lasting 30 minutes or more five limes a week, according to the AHA. This study focuses on sudden and cardiac death as an end-poishows that people who engage in moderate exercise such as walking or gardening are at lower risk for cardiac arnst than people who are sedentary. Other studies showing the same advantage for moderate exercise versus inactivity have used s, different including angichest na (the pain resulting from the heart not getting enough blood) and the need for angioplasty or bypass surgery (techniques to restore blood flow in blocked vessels leading toward or away from the heart). individual Any middle-age- d who has been inactive or has other risk factors for heart disease should consult his or her physician before engaging in a vigorous exercise nt end-point- Mothers Day Gift Ideas For Those With Alzheimers Disease Alzheimer's disease is a progressive brain disease that destroys shortterm memory and leaves it victims confused, anxious and forgetful.
