Incidents of bears killing livestock have risen in the 1990s, resulting in USDA - Wildlife Services having to kill increased numbers of bears. Bates said. From 1971 through . 1990, the average number of bears taken for depredation reasons was 12 annually. That number has risen significantly since then. In 1998, for example, 42 bears were killed for depredation reasons. A possibility that Utah's bear populations are increasing may be a factor in the increased number of depredation incidents, Bates said. Bear hair snag surveys started by the Division in 1998 are continuing in an effort to determine if bear pops lations are on the rise Bates said a late winter in 1991 that delayed the succulent grass bean normally eat during spring an early summer, probably played role in the number of bean thi killed livestock last yeai Depredation incidents decrease later in the summer when pinenuti acorns and mast crops became avail able, he said. ' Bates also said people leaving garbage and food in campground and other outdoor areas may be con tributing to the problem by drawinj bean to those areas and makin them leu wary.
