POWELL UfeMyloSpora Editor Gloria Montgomery is pretty dam proud to be named the Heber Valley Ait, Council's December Artist of the Month. But dont let her enthusiasm fool you, shes been in the limelight before. She has won awards ranging from Best in Show at the Utah State Fair to First Place at the St George Art Festival She has been in eight exhibitions and her work has been published in Draw Magazine and Utah Art Yet for die Heber artist, die growing notoriety wasnt exactly easy to come by. Its as much hard work as it is talent, said Montgomery in a recent phone interview. It's hard staying motivated working at home with all the interruptions. Montgomery went on to add that living the art life isn't all fun and games. She has to promote her artwork and do the marketing herself. And of course, she paints 30 to 40 hours a week. e Although her dream of beittg a artist is finally coining to fruition, she has worked long and hard to get where she is. I took classes constantly, she said of her time at the University of Utah and Brigham Young University. I was kind of a professional student." From there, Montgomery worked at One Stop, the Heber Creeper, and a local video shop. While I was working, all I foil-tim- 5 Ailnln 5.50 Children & Senior 1 could think about was painting. So when she considered going back for more education, she was ready to drop it all when a teacher told her to forget school and just paint Those words set her free and now shes painting for a living. been hard, but its getting better all the time, she said. The last couple of years have been really good." Not only is Montgomerys work winning awards and seeing more and more time at local art shows, they're also starting to sell more often. Case in point: just last week she made a sale to a business owner in Salt Lake City The man liked the piece so much, he has commissianed Montgomery to do another: Her most recent sells have all been black and white graphite pieces, which are her favorite. "I've won most of my awards with black and white pieces," Montgomery said. I'm most proud of my black and white work. I think its my best media. It comes easy to me." It is her love for Made and white that drove her in the selection process for the Artist of the Month display, going on now at the Wasatch County Library. All but three of the pieces are black and white. 1 wanted to do a black and white show, she said And judging by the public's reception at the show's opening, ait lovers are glad she stuck with her favorite medium.
