Show np Wh AT's HappenInq.;.; : a brief guide to local event! : t Truman Show Surprise Carrey Shines, Showcases More Serious Side in Lighthearted Movie What would you do if you discovered your 'aatiiolibwaailie? Whet if, aioce day one, your life was being broadcast, 24 hours a day, to the entire world? That's exactly whats " ' happen- ing to Truman Burbank (Jim ; Cutty) in At Truman Sham, but he doesn't know IL Yet , Truman Uvea in a small, pristine community where everyone knows each other. Little does Oil City Not the Summer Hiif off Truman know, however, that everyone in town, even hie wife and best friend, are actors taking orders from the big man upstairs. No, not God, but Christof (Ed Harris), the shows creator. Instead of was'ing precious time detailing what Truman does in his everyday life or focusing on the whole "televised scenario," the Truman Show gets to the good part by quickly .having Truman become paranoid as he begins to figure out what's happening. We're desperate for Tnunan to find the truth and to make his way into the real world, and we're having fun along the way. Unlike most modem movies, however, the Truman Shaw takes one step at a time without drawing out the suspense until its tempo is unbearable. Almost as if on cue, the film continually switches gears just before boredom seta in. And with the random, yet continuous ad placements, who can be bored7 These brief snippets used by the show's sponsors are used as comic relief for an otherwise serious yet lighthearted movie, which sets Ae Truman Sham apart from other Carrey films. Instead of showcasing his exaggerated facial contortions, Caney shows off bis acting skills. He docs a wonderful job without the need of his usual antics and sets himself in a dash along with die likes cf Tom Hanks. The Truman Sham is definitely the surprise blockbuster of the summer. : Who's it for? Anyone who has ever won dered what h would be like to have their lives telecast to thq world. And pretty much everyone else. Why foor stars? Not only does the Truman Show have a creative and aerie storyline, k never gets bogged down with unnecessary details and doesn't stretch on for an endless amount of time. On top of that, Carrey does a wonderful job with the character that may go down as one of the most memorable in movie history. And the Oil City Symphony, the latest produc- tion being performed at the Mary G. Steiner Egyptian Theatre in Park City, just gets better from there. The band members musical talents an nothing short of amazing. Mark (Brent Fotheringham) can tickle the ivories like nobody's business, Debbie (Darla Davis) takes center stage beating on the drums, Mary (Nola Campbell) plays nearly every instrument under the sun, and Mike (K.C Eldridge), the youngest of the group, brings back die keyboard sound we all fell in kwe with in the When ypu go back to your old stomping grands for a high school reunion, you dont expect loo much. Youd consider yourself lucky if yon wen to see old friends, drink some watered down punch, and raybe do a little dancing. And if yon wen told the band consisted of four former students, you wouldnt get your hopes up for a lockin good time. At Oil Cky High School, however, things an not how they appear. By the time this group their first number, "Count Your Blessings, you realize the foursome is like nothing youve ever experienced before. Theyre like the B52s in the Twilight Zone. 80S. While theyre playing, this kooky band of friends manages to sing, mixing in old favorites with some of their own. And if the lyrics dont make you laugh, their antics will. Whether its Mark's continuously flopping hair, Debbies drumstick twirl, or Mike's nqrvous monotone voice, there always seems to be something funny happening on stage.
