Unfortunately,, we now belong to the fraternity, if you will, of people who have lost a family member through tragedy. A staggering impact, hugely because of its suddenness, difficult to accept and impossible to understand.. But its grief'mnde easier to bear through die compassion, support, and acts ' of kindness performed by neighbors, friends," and in 'many instances mere acquaintances -with several offerings of from people whom we weren't aware even knew us. If it wasn't for all of these kind, thoughtful, caring people, tragedies like this, would be impossible to bear. Admittedly, small towns have their inadequacies and shortcomings, but in times of need such as these occasions, they have no peer. People respond. They show up. Ood btess you all And especially are we grateful to the incomparable and scarcely-heraldSummit County Search and Rescue group. When our daughter, Melanie, a as a Summit Registered Nurse, (and was ll County Pararoed) informed us that Peter had fallen into the river (Chalk Creek), Search and Rescue was already on the scene searching feverishly. Mobilizing very quickly, they had personnel there within minutes. When their scuba-diveand boaters produced no immediate positive results after mid--after night) they disbanded, confecting three ' neighboring counties (Wasatch; Salt Lake, and Weber) to assemble with them the next morning far a continuation of the search. . What an unbelievable effort from this combined group! Composed almost entirely of volunteers, they radiate enormous energy, confr- . well-wish- . ed on-ca- rs e and they tons. And yet they came, if for no other reason than a fellow human was in trouble and families were distressed. Dozens of vehicles involved, maybe as much as a couple of million dollars in equipment on the scene, ambulances, RN'a, Sheriff's and Fin Department per, sound skilled in fint-ai- d techniques - a massive outpouring of effort! Finally, the morning of the next day, I heard the words crackling from a Deputy's hand-se- t, 'We've found him. I walked die few feet over to the Deputy and said, "Did I hear correctly? They've found Peter?" He laid, Yes, they've got him." I walked back to my son and his wife, Jim and Dens (Peter's parents) and my wife, Louise, and told them. They cried. All of us dL At least this part was over. The mission of this magnificent, strong, quiet, unsung army of heroes was ended Their need now fulfilled, they conclude the details, pack up, mentally regroup and condition themselves for the next ' call... maybe daya away...maybe only minutes. And they will respond, again and again, testing their abilities' and their skills to die utmost an average of 120 calls per year - one about every three days. Our family has to follow their example. We have to regroup, mentally condition ourselves,' place our faith in God and in our family unity to help us through this, and vow to return the acts of kindness and compassion selfuhly granted to na by folks like yourselves with the fervent hope that the examples performed in our behalf will continue to be forthcoming and reciprocal $H communities during these agonizing times ofneed.. If Utahns say "yes' to SJR 10 and make it part of our constitution, all Utahns that are true friends of wild animals, fish and birds will be sure no narrow interest will force their agenda upon Utah citizens.
