Lost in Space, the newest movie to recreate an old television Lost iN Space show, revisits the Robinson Rated PG-1- 3 as family Starring:William Hurt, Gary get, they Oldman, and Matt LeBlanc well, lost in Yet space. time this ns 12 its around, not so campy, Cheesy, maybe, but its definitely a higher quality cheese. Set in the distant future, Lost in Space finds Dr. Robinson (William Hurt) preparing to take his family out to space to begin colonization of another world. Alpha Prime. Once the family and the pilot. Major West (Matt LeBlanc), have been safely stored in their sleeping chambers, the familiar sounding robot begins its sinister new program: to destroy the mission, and the Robinsons. Of course, the family manages to stay alive, as does the terrorist saboteur, Dr. Smith (Gary Oldman). However, the ship is thrown through space, and is it turns out, time. Discovering a way home from deep space is one thing, but the added element of time travel adds greatly to the film, by giving the family more obstacles than simply finding a way home. Although the film takes an unnecessarily long time getting the family out to space, once it does, Lost in Space really trices off. The special effects are nothing shy of amazing, and the movie moves speed. Youve got ray guns, along at break-nec- k and an army of killer spiders. robots, talking What more could you ask from a science fiction movie? Unfortunately, Lost in Space tries to give viewers more. Instead of simply launching the family into space, we spend enough time on earth to see the families dysfunctions. The overworked father doesnt spend enough time at home, and as a result. Penny (Lacey Chabert) becomes a young, rebellious punk, and young Will (Jack Johnson) gets lost in his creative genius. The movie follows these troubles to their logical, and obvious, conclusions, which makes Loot in Space less appealing and less enjoyable. At times, the emotional scenes slow down the fast pace and trip up the action. Since this is primarily an action movie, who needs to see a father learn the errors of his ways? Just get to the explosions and time machine, right? Fortunately, the dysfunctional family routine doesn't detract too much from the fun factor of Lost in Space. It's a thrill a minute. But believe me, this time around is a lot darker than the original aeries. Oldman makes Dr. Smith actually evil, someone who should be reckoned with. And surprisingly, LeBlanc loses his Friends personality and does a good job portraying a strong, commanding officer. This darkness adds to the realism and takes away from the campy feel. Sure, its obviously make believe, but it comes a long way from the original. As a matter of fact, the basic premise is all that truly remains of that long forgotten series. This time around, the family goes through many more adventures than just finding a way home. The darkness of the movie creates a desperate feel to the familys struggles to stay alive and get home. Add to that the amazing effects and a far superior story line, and you have a much better take of a 60s television series. The slow beginning and the family emotional struggles do, however, detract a little from the overall feel of the film, but not enough to completely ruin the picture. fan should miss this one.
