My mother used to put "polish the fbrniture" on my chores list every week when I was growing up. Im lucky if I get around to it twice e year these days. What's the rule of thumb to go by for bow often is too often? A Heres my rule of thumb. If you use a piece of wooden furniture on a daily basis, say s kitchen table, wood cabinets or s coffee table in the TV room, wipe it down with a damp not wet-c-loth and polish the piece on a weekly basis. If it's a decorative piece of furniture that isnt touched or sat upon often, my best advice is polish about four times a year or to make it easier, polish with the seasons. Tie it into major holidays: Easter or Passover, Fourth of July, Halloween and the winter holidays. Use a protective cream polish like Weiman Furniture Cream, which will allow the wood to breathe as the humidity in the house changes. How can you tell if your furniture ha a wax build-u- p and how do you get rid of it? A. Waxy yellow build-u- p sounds like the complaint of 1930s housewives. But it can definitely compromise the beauty of your wood furniture. Built-u-p wax can dull the finish of woods and make self-address-ed ' them more susceptible low-alkali- ne ty Think of furniture treatments like cosmetics. A wood soap is s cleanser, a cream polish is s moiqturixer, and they both help prevent cracking and fading. Youd never apply a second layer of makeup without removing the first, so treat your fine furniture the same way. Q. The rings disappear in a few hours. Coasters can be a lifesaver A. for fine wood. Wood was once a living thing, so consequently, it breathes. You may notice some pieces in your home expanding and contracting based on whether the house is humid or dry. The pores in your wood expand with moisture, and that puts your finish which doesn't expand the same way at risk. What you need to do is protect the wood underneath your finish. Make sure you're using a nonsilicone-based furniture polish. This will nourish and protect the wood beneath your finish. If for some reason the rings last long after your brother-in-la.leaves, try cleaning the area with Weiman Wood Soap. That can often bring the moisture to the surface to ease in drying.
