Lots of folks do this in South fon (and educaSummit, Park City and Snyderville. as part of an communiall these of facilities the State in extension of Library tional) ties. It would be impossible to analyze all of the benefits derived from encouraging parents to start their children reading as early in life as possible. You cannot start them too early. Many pediatricians, in fact, instruct mothers to read to their children while still in the womb. I, personally, know many, many mothers (and some fathers) who read bedtime stories to their children, without fail, every single night of their early lives. Reading, lied hobby, is very easy for me to expound being perhaps my highest-prio- ri . upon. Earl Nightingale, whose philosophies have had an enormous effect on my life, stated: 111610 is nothing in life that cannot be made better simply by reading a book on the subject." In his weekly radio address last April, President Clinton said? "...students who fail to read by the fourth grade are more likely to drop out of school, and less likely to succeed in life.. .40 percent of our 4th grade students pan'tread. on a basic level" Utah, tally for all school ages"- - records'an alarming 36 percent that read below the basic proficiency level. And The Carnegie Foundation concludes that children ages 9 to 14 spend more than 20 percent of their waking hours watching TV, but only 1 percent of their free time reading (Deseret News on-goi- ng High Outdoor Adventure Pursuits Program The High Outdoor Adventure Pursuits Program, offered through The Norwegian School of Nature Life, will continue with mountaineering, mountain biking, hiking and backpacking for youths in grades fourth through twelfth. Her secretary, information producer, and statistical overseer is Nora Clark, who does an unbelievable amount of writing, editing, and compiling of much of the story time material. Unfortunately, this activity operates on a very limited budget, and is practically fundless for the balance of the fiscal year. Adding to the difficulties in maintaining a smooth operation, Nora does her unbelievable volone finger method of ume of records-keepin- g with the avtyping, which is quite a departure from her normal erage time. You see, she experienced an almost fatal auto accident several years ago, and has been handicapped? confined to a wheelchair ever since. The accident, although raising cane with her physically, has done little to deter her grit and determination in accomplishing the tasks in life she sets for herself - and records-keepin-g is one of them. Well, the point of all this is the fact that her parents, being the devoted, dependable type of people they are, give her their undivided time and support, and it is hot unusual that they are sometimes required to transport her to and from the library facilities as many as 3 to 4 times every week. A horrendous time commitment that could be greatly diminished for the betterment of the entire program if she had her own computer. It would be a marvelous act of compassion if those of us who care to do so could donate This would afew dollars toward the purchase of one for her home-us- e. greatly speed up the gathering of information for this program, make for much more efficiency and enable more children to participate in the reading activities. Certainly, your children and grandchildren would all have mote opportunities to add to their reading proficiencies. Any amounts donated will be appreciated, so just send what you can to Summit County Bookmobile, attention Cathy' Louder, Coordinator, P.O. Box 206, Coalville, UT 84017. No one can be the total authority on what parents, duties should involve, but I am of the opinion that parents owe it to them- -, selves - as one of their duties - to share the joy of reading to their children, their grandchildren, or anyone else's children who are available and care to join in this wholesome activity Thought For The Day: "You may have tangible wealth untold; Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold.
