Show Friday, Dacambar 29, 1995 Please Don't Drink and Drive by Bill Carter, RN, BSN Elizabeth Carter, RN, MS lated New Year's festivities will be here soon. It's the time of year when people get together to celebrate, and with iftomes an increase in traffic in Summit County due to visitors who come especially to celebrate. Traffic in the area is heavier than ever. Not surprisingly, the number of motor vehicle accidents always increases at this time of year, too. One of the reasons for the. increase is the excessive use of al? cohol as people celebrate during the holiday season. Drinking and driving just don't mix! The Utah Safety Council estimate that at least five people pm1 year die in Utah traffic accidents during the holiday traffic. Tragically, the news reports each year confirm that this happened. These deaths are so tragic and nearly all of diem occur due to alcohol-r- e automobile accidents. Research has shown that 40 to 50 d drivers percent of have blood alcohol levels that meet or exceed legal limits. This means fatally-injure- the drivers are legally defined as being intoxicated. Even if you don't drink and drive, you are at risk - completely sober driven and their passengers are at risk for injury by drunk driven who are on the road. It is tragic that so many injuries and deaths occur due to alcohol-relate- d automobile accidents. The Utah Safety Council recommends the following safety tips to help reduce your potential for being involved in automobile accidents: Remember to use seatbelts (and children's car seats) for all passengers who are riding in the automobile. Drive within the speed limit. Practice safe, courteous driving habits. Don't drink and drive - people who drink need to have a designated driver. Drive defensively and be on the lookout for other drivers who may be intoxicated. Signs of drinking and other drug use include driving too fast or too slow, weaving in and out of lanes, and disregarding traffic signs. If you see a driver who you suspect is intoxicated, keep your car away from theirs, stay behind them, don't try to pass them, and notify the police immediately (report the make, color, license plate number, and direction the car is travelling). financial problem when taxpayers are paying 8 percent additional interest to pay off a consumer loan. 12-1- The Treasurer's Office developed a program several years ago to help make paying property tai es as cus- tomer friendly as , Friday; Miss Pins The first week of the seco..d L.lf of bowling for the Friday afternoon league was a fun day as we also celebrated Christmas by enjoying a nice ham dinner and the exchanging of gifts. Taxpayers can pay in installment prepayments during the year instead of once a year. Over 800 Summit County families pay taxes in or quarterly monthly, installment payments. It is similar to paying escrow payments to the mortgage company who in turn pay their taxes in November.
