A Happy Choice by Leon Simister, Columnist "Hope springs eternal," perhaps an phrase that should have had the words "every new year" added to it Assuming that has happened and the quotation is now complete, let's proceed. It's a marvelous thing -each new year - because if traditionally applied, it's a whole new beginning again. We can forget past mistakes simply by mentally conditioning ourselves to the fact that we will start all over again with a fresh, clean attitude. We set a lot of new goals and make a bunch of promises to ourselves that we are going to be a better person this year. About a century after George Washington's death, someone found a notebook at Mount Vernon in Washington's own handwriting that he had written when he was just 14 years of age while attending school in Fredricksburg, Virginia. It contained 54 "Rules of Gvility..." According to historians of the time, he had apparently copied them from a 1664 translation of older French works. So for those who want a target or goal towards which one might apply their honorable intentions, here arga (selected) few samples of young George's observations: 1. Every action in company ought to be with some sign of respect to those present. 2. In the presence of others sing not to yourself with a humming voice, nor drum with your fingers or feet. 8. Show yourself not glad at the misfortune of another, though he were your enemy. 19. Wherein you reprove another be unblamable yourself, for example is more prevalent than precept. 20. Use no reproachful language against anyone, neither cursings nor revilings. 30. Speak not injurious words, neither in jest nor earnest. Scoffat none, although they give occasion. 43. Be not curious to know the affairs of others, neither approach to those that speak in private. 49. Speak no evil of the absent, for it is unjust. And the last excerpt for your tentative approval; 54. Labor to keep alive in your breast that little spark of celestial fire called conscience. There you have 'em, some oldies, but goodies - very good thoughts of lasting values passed down through the ages for your perusal and hopefully. ..application. is a task which Anyway, it's a suggestive jump-sta- rt most everyone would like to accomplish, but which most also think about doing "tomorrow", a mystical day that keeps leaping forward and elusively staying ahead of you, always. It occurred to me that most tasks which we put off 'till tomorrow" are phased out because we Ipck Many folks are familiar with the story of the ancient philosopher, Demosthenes, who, although a brilliant man, had an embarrassing speech impediment which he overcame by placing pebbles in his mouth while he practiced speaking until he was able to control his impediment to eventually become a great orator. And the great Socrates, whose opinion on the insisted that the "ordered soul" is the only truly matter of the one happy one, and only capable of living the "Good Life". Aristotle nodded agreement when he said, "We are the sum of our actions". It appears that virtually all of the world's great thinkers agree that all men have the ability, if not the discipline, to control their own behavior. And they even proffer the solution as seeking the pathway of moderation. In other words, know what areas one is personally extreme in either over-doin- g between as the and then seek a target mid-wa- y or under-doin- g starting point for improvement. It's probably a good philosophy and after all, the new year is just around the comer. What say we all give it a try? If there were percent participation, everything would be better worldwide. That goal may be a little lofty, but all changes start within the individual. over-work- ed one-hundr- ed Thought For The Day: "Failure is an opportunity. If you blame someone else, there is no end to the blame." Lao Tzu (from his Tao Te Ching -4th Century, B.C.) The new mine ride, which recently opened in Park City, is a real treasure in our midst, and will probably will be a great asset for the tourists coming to visit It is a well planned and designed structure and one that reminds us of the history in the area. Several new businesses have opened throughout the county which should be a boon to the residents. The owners have been very gracious and I appreciated this, and wish them well in their endeavors. Also on my list would have to be the many new people I have met They have been so neat and helpful and added a lot to my life. Those who I associate With at the Heber "Wave newspaper who put the "Bee" together each week are great It isn't always easy to communicate thoughts from here to there, but they seem to understand what I mean, and that isn't an easy task. Thanks so much. . My family hks witnessed the births of several new babies into our lives, which is always a thrilling event. Each one brings so much joy and happiness with them. I must say that I am blessed with some of the greatest family members in the world - from my parents to my children - to my sisters, their families, and They bring joys too great to mention. in-la- With the year 1995 ending, and 1996 beginning, Sharon and I would like to take a moment to extend our thanks to those who have helped make our job a little easier. The Rocky Mountain School of Bee'Office Hours personnel, The Smith's Balloon Festival was pretty cool with the large variety of colorful balloons that floated through the air. Some of them were pretty creative and the booths offered a lot of different arts and crafts. The Summit County Fair just seems to get bigger and better each year. The key word is volunteerism and, boy, does it make a difference. I would personally like to see more art work displayed next year, however. I have grown to respect these people very much for the effort they give in behalf of the residents in the county with very little thanks or pay for that matter. They often are called upon to place their lives on the line as well. When someone needs medical assistance, the EMTs are on the job as quickly and efficiently as possible. To all of these great people, I extend my thank you to than. While covering stories at the courthouse, there have been times when I haven't understood, exactly, what was going on. The commissioners have been an interesting group to get to know, as they meet every Monday to make decisions for the county. Some are accepted well, others are not, but they do try and that is important When it comes to legal matters, I have really appreciated those who have given me some of their time to assist me, so that I can learn. There are other times when I have needed help with stories and everyone has been so neat ' and awesome to be of help. There are too many names, and I would probably leave someone out, so thanks everyone. The school personnel of the North and South Summit Districts have been great when asked to do something for me.' The students who write the weekly news reports are doing a fantastic job and I appreciate them "taking over" and getting the news in on time. Keep up the good work, students. Some of the fun things I have done this year would have to include: The program which was held recently. What a great thing for the volunteers to do and the children were so open and receptive to the idea. The Arts Festival in Park City was so great. So much talent displayed in such a small area and so many states represented as well. People attending really seemed to have a great time. makes me older. The year of 1995 has certainly been one that has been filled up with many interesting things to do and see. With assignments for filling up the pages of the paper coming my way, I have had die opportunity to talk with so many fascinating folks and cover events I may not have gone to otherwise. In this respect, I find myself feeling a lot of gratitude for my job. During the past year.J have been to several accident scenes. One of the most unusual was when an armored truck tipped over on eastbound on the way to Wyoming. Upon arriving at the scene, I was jokingly told not to even pretend to bend down and retrieve some of the change which was spread out over the highway and adjacent ground.
