Show Friday, October 13, 1995 National Fight Against Each year Utah celebrates its rich archaeological, paleontological. Native American, and historic heritage with informative lectures, programs, activities, Native craft America s No. Killer Kicks Off in 800 Communities In more than 800 cities and .towns across the country this lall, hundreds of thousands of Americans . .will take potentially lifesaving rt steps - literally - toward a in a national effort lifestyle to fight the country's No. 1 killer heart-sma- and disabler, cardiovascular disease. On Saturday, Oct. 7, the American Heart Association, Utah Affiliate through the Combined efforts of the Sandy and Salt Lake Divisions will hold a scenic Heartwalk '95 at the Dimple Dell Regional Park located at 10500 South 1300 East in Sandy. The walk, along marked and developed trails through a natural oak setting in early October, promises to be not only good for the heart, but ' also for the soul according to Heart Walk chair Nancy Shay. "The Dimple Dell setting is spectacular year around, but its lush scrub oak that stands at the foot of what many suggest is among the most scenic part of the Wasatch Mountain range provides for a very enjoyable walk route. Walkers are likely to become so caught up in the scenery, they'll forget they are exercising," Shay suggests. Three routes, a 3K, a 5K and a 10K, will take Heart Walkers from the trailhead east through the all natural park, into the gully area and return . to the trailhead. Beginning at 9:00 a.m. on October 7, the Heart Walk is part of the It h 1 ' j "j Mf M! I Of the top 10 leading causes of death in the United States, cardiovascular disease tops the list and annually kills more Americans than the combined total of the other remaining leading causes of death, including cancer, accidents, pneumonia, diabetes, AIDS, suicides and homicides. Tragically, deaths don't tell the whole story: today, one in four Americans - nearly 59 million people - suffer from the debilitating effects of cardiovascular disease, which includes high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, stroke and rheumatic heart disease. "The key to reducing heart disease and stroke, the leading cause of serious disability, is to educate and directly involve Americans in heart-healtactivities," said Dr. Sidney C. Smith, Jr., President of AHA . "The Healthy Choice American Heart Walk is an unprecedented effort to orchestrate what we hope hy will be a national, interactive event," said Smith. "By participating in the walks, Americans can help themselves by getting started on the path to heart health, and help others by raising funds to fight the most deadly, pervasive disease in our country." This is the fourth year that the AHA has organized this national walk. Smith said the event focuses on Healthy Choice American Heart fitness and nutrition because of .Walk. Association with support from lead sponsor Healthy Choice and sustaining sponsor NordicTrack, the national lead walk will be held on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 28, and most local walks will bq held in September and October on city streets, park paths and neighborhood sidewalks Update Regarding Trail Mountain Mine Decision cholesterol, physical inactivity, high blood pressure and smoking -can be controlled in large part through regular physical activity and a balanced diet Studies show that physically inactive people are twice as likely as active people to develop coronary heut uisease, yet one in four American adults does not exercise during leisure time. Research also shows that high blood cholesterol and high blood pressure, which relate in part to poor nutrition, dramatically increase the risk for heart disease. However, 52 percent of American adults have blood cholesterol levels higher than the desirable level of 00 mgdl or less, and one in four adults has high blood pressure. Smith says the first steps toward heart health include: aspects of Utah archaeology, paleontology, Native American cultures, andor historic settlers.
