Awards Evening Tuesday, May 16, South Summit High School held their annual awards evening. Only a elected few were invited to be recognized for their academic and athletic accomplishments. These high school students were honored with awards and trophies for Academic Decathlon, Sterling Scholar, Mock Trials, English officers, etc. These awards. Poetry, being studentbody and winning the Art Show, are only a few of the many Following the awards pre- sentation, senior students were awarded scholarships: Kellie Kirkham received a $500 scholarship to Dixie College; Nicole Mitchell and Jimmy Clegg received a cash scholarship of $250 dollars each; the Booster Gub awarded Tanya Woolstenhulme and Cameron Maxfield with a $500 scholarship each; Cody Atkinson and Tanya Woolstenhulme were awarded the National Scholar Athlete Scholarship; Deborah Lewis was awarded the Utah Power and Light scholarship; Kellie Kirkham received a scholarship from the Summit County Farm Bureau for $500; The Neil Gines scholarships were awarded to Cody Atkinson and Jasin Leavitt for $500 each; Brandi Gordon was awarded the Mr. and Mrs. Fields scholarship; the Nathan Leithhead scholarship went to Jake Aplanalp; $1,000 was awarded to Sarah White for the Jay Sheldon Fitzgerald scholarship; Nicole Mitchell and Craig Fry were awarded the Fair to Average scholarship for $500 each; Park City Realtors awarded Kellie Kirkham $1,000, and Hollie Walker, $1,500. The military awarded the Distinguished Athlete Award to Brandi Gordon for volleyball and basketball; Camron Maxfield for wrestling and football, and Jake Aplanalp for basketball and football; the army also awarded a musical excellence award to Shawn Cummings for the trumpet and the French horn, and Jake Alpanalp for the trombone; Brandi Mitchell, Lance Jorgenson, and Shelly Thomas were awarded Full Ride scholarships in vocational areas; Clinton Moon and Raymond Moya also received scholarships in mechanical areas. Clint's is a Full Ride to UVSC for about $10,000 and Raymond's is for about $750. the awards evening was All-in-- all a great turnout! Congratulations to everyone and good luck to seniors. During Landen's three year swimming career, Dennis and Carol traveled all over the state supporting Linden and the rest of the team. They even traveled as far as St George. In three years they never missed a swimming meet - home or away. We would like to thank them for being the "Most Dedicated Parents". The high school swimming and ond, Amanda Walker and Greg diving teams held their annual awards banquet on Wednesday, April 18. It was held at the middle school cafeteria. Dinner was served at 6:30 p.m. The high school provided the chicken and the parents and the swimmers brought the salads and die desserts. A short version of the season was captured on video and put to music. This was prepared by the father of Stephanie Prather Atkinson; third, Landen Lance; fourth, D.J. Glade and Ryan Staples. "Most Hollie will be the beginning of the foundation of the future success of the girls team.She was also, the . sec- Nathan Inspirational", Outstanding", and "Most Valuable" you may have noticed that here wasn't a winner for the girls. That's because Hollie Walker was the winner of all three awards. Hollie began swimming as a freshman when there wasn't much of a girls team. She has even had to swim two legs of a relay; because there wasn't enough girls. A special thank you award was given to Dennis and Jeanie Glade for being Booster Club presidents. Both of the teams were much improved this year. We compete against larger schools, since we're the only 2A school with a swimming team. This year Tonya Worthen finished third at 3A State in diving. While Wayne Mildon finished in fourth in the 100 yard back. Landen Lance and D.J. Glade both placed in the 50 yard free. The boys team qualified two of three relays to State. This is quite an accomplishment, since only the top six teams qualify and only the top individuals. Relay members were: Wayne Mildon, Ryan Staples, D.J. Galde, Landen Lance, 12 Greg Atkinson, and Jason Scales. All present at the banquet had an enjoyable time. Head Coach Judy Staples thanked all of the swimmers, divers, and their parents for a successful year. She also thanked her assistants, Dan Peterson, Bridget Klug, and diving coach Trish Gerlach. These people volunteer their time. The swimmers and divers, will be 'attendingcamps at BYU this sumi mer. Several students from the state were sent letters of invitation because of their athletic achievements. There are twenty students from the state who will be going. Brittani and Julie are extremely excited and soon after sent off for their passports. When asked why she decided to go, Julie stated, "It looks like fun and seems as if it'll be a good experience." Brittani and Julie commented tbat they and felt chosen been had cited they privileged to be able to go. They athhope to expose the Australian letic programs to how they play ball. They also hope to improve their chances to play college ball and hope it will look good to col- lege coaches and scouts. The trip is fifteen days, from July 15 through the 13th. They will from spend most of the time flying Brisbane, Australia, where they are for some staying, to New Zealand, On Wednesday night, the South Summit Baseball Team met at the high school to hold their awards banquet. They gorged themselves on cake, ice cream, and banana splits. There was plenty for everyone and toppings galore. Team members and coaches also voted for the players they thought to be outstanding in certain areas. Cooper Crystal was named Most Valuable Player; Carl Stevens, Golden Glove; John Stevens, Best at Batting; Craig Fry, Sportsmanship; Wes Wilson and Paul Hortin, most RBI's with Wes Wilson having the best on base percentage; and Paul Sargent, Most Improved Player. Plaques were also presented to Paul Hortin for his service as team captain, Cooper 4, Lynsi Georgi, barrels; Patrick Swain, calf roping and team roping. Teacher Appreciation Week May 8th through the 12th was Appreciation Week throughout the nation. This week was the time for everyone at South Summit to show the faculty members how important they are. On Tuesday, May 9, the teachers received a poem and an apple in their boxes at school. Wednesday, the District Office gave them a decoration for their desks. On Thursday, they received a nice pen from the student council, and die Education Association served treats.. Friday, Teacher the studentbody and student council provided the staff with a pizza party. The week of May 1st through the 5th was designated as Classified Week. The purpose was to honor all of the custodians, secretaries, bus drivers, aides, and lunch ladies. games. There will be twelve games in They received a mug filled with twelve days. Mr. Randy Taylor Mr. Randy Taylor, basketball South Summit High School teacher, is retiring after 34 years of teaching in the South Summit School District. Mr. Taylor is the husband of lleane Moore. They were blessed with five sons, of which four are living, four lovely daughters-in-la- w, and are proud grandparents to six grandchildren. After several moves, Mr. Taylor's family settled in Kamas when he was two or three. He has lived in Kamas ever since. After attending twelve years in the Kamas schools, he graduated from South Summit High School in May 1957, with honors, being the third highest academic student in his class. The fall after graduation, Mr. Taylor enrolled to Utah State University in Logan, Utah in the College of Education. Mr. Taylor graduated from Utah State, June 10, 1961 with a bachelor degree in Secondary Education having a composite major in Social Studies and Speech. Mr. Taylor began his teaching career for the South Summit School District, in 1961 teaching the forth grade. That following summer he went back to USU and earned his games running the scoreboard, he announced all the football games until the booster club was formed about 1992. He also refereed basketball and wrestling for about 5 years. 10-1- Mr. Taylor was South Summit Education Association Pres, three times including this current year, 1994-199- 5. Mr. Taylor was honored at a SSEA dinner May 10, were he was presented with a clock in appreciation to his 34 years of teaching at South Summit High School. Mr. Taylor taught many students and has enjoyed and appreciated their many personalities. He also has enjoyed the association of countless fellow teachers and would like to thank them all for the many good experiences they have shared. South Summit School , District would also like to thank Mr. Taylor for the many memories and also for being the great teacher that he was. Thank's Mr. "T"! "When the seniors march down the aisle to receive their diploma on May 26 their class advisor, Mr. "T", will also be saying goodbye to the past school years." Career Day at High School On Tuesday May 16, a Career Day was held at South Summit High School. This was set up by the ETS Advisor, Mrs. Stembridge. The students went to all six of their classes in the morning. After lunch, Career Day began. It started off with a talk by Tom Anderson, who is an employee of Tapestry Gives a Concert The Summit South High School's two chorus classes gave a concert on Friday, May 12. The Tapestry performed their songs from their competitions and a few other songs just for fun. The Music Machine also performed some fun songs. Some of the solos from region solos and ensemble were performed, as well as the ensembles. The Tapestry presented their trophies from their competition in California to Mr. Moser for the trophy case. The concert ended with mixed feelings throughout the group. Some had tears and others had smiles. Everyone seemed to have a good time. Thanks to Mrs Silvester and the Senior Tapestry members, Amy Richmond, Anna Bates, B'andra McAffee, Brandi Gordon, Deborah Lewis, Doug Ruff, Emily Evans, Hollie Walker, Jodi Mitchell, Olivia McNeil, Reed Milliner, Sandi Hamilton, Sean Cummings, Shelley Thomas, and Tami Moser. Elementary teaching certificate, and continued teaching the fourth grade until 1965, when he was hired as the History, Speech and Drama teacher for South Summit High School. During the next thirty years, Mr. Taylor taught Utah History, 7th thru 12th grade English, college credit courses, speech, drama, was the assistant wrestling coach from 1975-198and was the baseball coach for two years. He has directed several school plays and operettas; been responsible for many speech and drama meets, wrestling and baseball tournaments; numerous Jr. Proms and Graduations. Mr. Taylor also supported South Summit students in their activities-O- ne could find Mr. Taylor at all the 26-2- 7 The members have been to 14 rodeos this spring and eight members have qualified for state. They would like to invite everyone Crystal for being assistant captain, and Carl Stevens for filling the position of manager. Many of the team members expressed their satisfaction with the way things turned out this year. "You can't complain when you win more games than you ever have before." In the opinion of the other players, the team captains did an excellent job and helped the team immensely. Many felt this was one of the funnest years they have had. "The coaches were great and the players worked well together most of the time." The team members showed their appreciation to the coaches as Paul Hortin presented Harold Eubanks, T.L. Eubanks, Sterling Draper, and Mont Cooper with coaches jackets. Retiring After 34 Years of Teaching swimming and diving, Jr. swim and high school teams. Rodeo Club Activities May The South Summit High School Rodeo Gub will be held May 26-2- 7 in Oakley. After the talk, the students began their Career Day. There were five sessions that each student signed up for. Each session was 25 Election Week The South Summit High School halls have been a mess because of the 1995-9- 6 elections. The elections were held during the week of May 3rd through the 5th. The candidates who are running for the 1995-9- 6 officers were President: Ben Harris and Brett Lee; Vice President: DJ Glade and Bryan Haakenson; Secretary: Holly Van Tassell; Historian: Joe Frazier; Boys Giairman: Allen McNeil and Cameron Powell; Girls Chairman: Sondi Mitchell, and Michelle Ruf. The Cheerleaders also ran during this time. On Wednesday, the candidates gave their speeches and the Cheerleaders tried out in front of the studentbody and judges. Thursday, they campaigned with posters, buttons and goodies. Friday, the green and white parties performed skits in front of the studentbody, then ev- eryone voted. The studentbody gathered into the auditorium at the end of the day to find out the results. The studentbody President is Brett Lee; the Vice President is Bryan Haakenson; the Secretary is Holly Van Tassell; the Historian is Joe Frazier; the Boys Chairman is Cameron Powell, and the Girls Chairman is Sondi Mitchell.
