Show Tho Summit County Boo 2A Friday, Novombor 4, 1994 Don't Shoot Pots Dear Editor: This letter Is being written in hopes to save the lives of family pets being shot by neighbors. Our family pet and hunting dog was recently shot numerous times by an off-du- ty highway patrolman iii the Woodland area. Our dogs are kenneled in a $500 kennel and dont normally run loose. The dogs were unfortunately let out by kids playing in our yard. The pa- trolman shot and killed one dog with a AK47 assault rifle and wounded the other. After the shooting, he chose to remain anonymous, but in a small town news travels fast After speaking with the . . patrolman, we learned the dogs had spent most of the day around his property, yet he chose to shoot the dogs instead of calling animal control. Both dogs were bird hunting dogs so it was only natural that eventually they would go after his geese. The patrolman lives within 50 feet of a major roadway and has neighbors within two hundred feet on either side of him and another house to the rear of him, not to mention horses on all sides. The county has a ordinance in effect which allows anyone to fire a high powered rifle at a dog thats into livestock or fowl no matter where you live. The ordinance, according Tell Me About It Pams Place Are you in the mood for a riddle? Do you know what is happening (or has happened) last week? Let me give you a clue. It is something that is held in November, coming upon us for several months now, and involves meetings, hand shaking and door knocking. Give up? It's election time! When the election campaign starts to really get in full swing, you are apt to hear many things coming forth from the candidates. These include achievements which they may have accomplished in the past, their future goals, and lots of other interesting little tidbits of knowledge. During the campaign, there are nights in which we have the opportunity to find out more about those who are running for office. If you attended one, or several of these, you could possibly find your mind being changed by something that was said or done. It was interesting to me to see just how easily this vote swaying" could be accomplished. For instance, I have a friend who had definitely settled upon a certain candidate and when- -, ever possible, the qualities of said person would be mentioned. However, after attending one of these little and seeing the candidate of choice "do their thing, my friends opinion was changed immediately. All of a sudden, there are only a few weeks left before the voting process takes place. At this time, one can count on seeing several strange vehicles in town that cany those running for office (and several of their close friends and family members). This will give you another chance to learn more about the candidates as the visits are usually accompanied by pamphlets describing just what the person running stands for and hopes to accomplish. Many times, you can meet with the candidate in person, and express concerns you may have about events taking place in the county that may be bothering you. (The candidates will usually listen as its part of their job description.) ' Each year there seem to be more and more issues being presented to us, and we must be on our toes to try to figure out who would be a better representative of the county and the goals which we would like to see reached. Right now, Summit County is being faced with a major growth spurt, which in turn brings with it many issues such as water supply, school growth, population, and land usage. Many of the problems now facing Summit County, at the present time, could become worse without proper controls. When I was growing up, I would never have visualized the many complex events taking place around us. (I am sure that there were some who could see what was coming.) Just how do you go about choosing a candidate? Do you vote Republican because your grandfather was one? Do you vote Democrat that is how your spouse is voting? Will it be the Independent candidate you choose? It is really important to exercise the right to vote which 1 be-ciu- se is ours. Honestly, I agree that making such a choice is a hard decision at times. to our advantage to take a few moments to really think about the issues and those who we cast our vote for. Remember to be sure to vote, as ypur vote could make the different in a close race. ;My fun time this week would be seeing all the cars and people who came out to see all the little ghosts and goblins during the annual elemen-tat- y Halloween Parade. I believe some of the leaders had more fun than the children. Try to remember that you are one of those who can be fooled some of die time. Unknown ; It-i- s Shine on Harvest Moon by Leon Simister, Columnist series) (First of a two-pa- rt are all words derived horn the Latin, Luna, Lunacy, lunatic, looney name for the moon, which also doubled as the ancient Romans name for Goddess of the Moon. Many unexplained weird happenings are credited to the effects of the full moon,. Stock brokers and auctioneers both at- -, tribute livelier sales during the full moon phases. Many criminologists claim that crimes, especially assaults and other crimes of a more violent nature, increase at that time. Some of the most active periods experienced by policemen, firemen, ambulance driven, and other ns, happen at the time of either a new moon or full moon. More suicides, crimes of passion, and accidents are noted during these phases, as well. Many of these occurrences have, historically, been recorded and blamed onto the effects of the moon down, through the ages, because both cultures ' : Eastern and Western have documented kooky and weird human and animal behaviorial patterns tracing back as far as four centuries prior to the birth of Christ and continuing on up to the present time. It hasn't been too human zanyness as a delong ago since the courts ruled out moon-cause- d fense for .crimes committed. The famous Sir William Blackstone, English behavior as a valid excuse for jurist, recognized and allowed moon-effectSort of a claim. In fact, a fellow wrong-doinby the name of Charles Hyde (circa 19th Century) copped that type of plea and used it as a defense for some (plural) murders he committed. The story goes that he did lose his case, but many believe that the Dr. JekyllMr. Hyde horror story penned by Robert Louis Stevenson came from that particularly dazzling bit of legal footwork. Many facts, however, do prove that the moon, indeed, does influence many thinsg the greatest of. which are those affecting nature. Fiddler crabs change color according to the position of the moon. Oysters open and close and change their feeding cycles in relation to moon changes, and coral polyps spawn within one week following every full moon period. Psychologists maintain that the same effect exerted by the moon upon the oceans tides has also a definite effect upon, human emotions, metabolism, and fertility... as well as increasing ovulation and menstruation cycles possibly due to its influence upon the earths electromagnetic field. So if you can't pull your watch out of your pocket to check the time, because its magnetized to your bod, blame the frill moon. Ill bet on one sure thing, though that there are more marriage proposals when the moon is full, than any other time. But when you admire a full moon, dont you think about actors like Lon just a little bit and Boris their Karloff and Chaney frightening performances as Wolfman and the monster of Jekyll and Hyde in some of the old-tihorror movies?.. .Sure you do. Song writers, since time immemorial have long ago exhausted the English vocabulary of words rhyming with moon. You know cm all because youve heard and used em all thousands of times yourself. And since the Apollo moon landings, Michael Jackson has fluidly and skillfully demonstrated his famous Moon Walk innumerable times. The moon has always played a major role in Pagan religions, as they recognized the power of the full moon as the power to increase the futility of their crops and their posterity. Current statistics prove they are correct because there are large increases in births during the full moon. The word honeymoon has its origin in an ancient German ceremony which or one month was celebrated by newlyweds for one moons cycle the main purpose of which, was to take frill advantage of the increased And, unlike many of todays newlyweds, Til bet they didn't their honeymoons in Las Vegas either, where the odds may not have spend been in their favor.
