The Mayflower, by Kate Caffiey. Susan compared the reaT Pilgrims and die trip of the Mayflower to die coocept that we all have developed in our minds through die history books and other sources. In the year 1620, die English thought America would be a great place to go. They heard there was gold in abundance, the Indians were not hostile, there was plenty of food, die land was rich, there were lots of fish, i there were riches in plenty! The Speedwell had so many problems, it was decided that Who's 9hg.ro in HHnfcand BhieR, 'JiiiiiiiiiimiiiiiiiiiiHiiiiiiiiiiiiih I w it was not seaworthy, so they aborted their voyage, but the Mayflower continued on course. The actual journey on die ocean was nine weeks, but the people lived on die boat for eight mooths. They had very cramped living quarters. The ship itself was obscure and small. Each passenger had a total area of die size erf a single mattress, under a five foot ceiling in which to cook, eat sleep and dress " plus all the rest of living. All the supplies they would need in the New World would have to be stored on the ship, so die passengers did not have much room. Contrary to many peoples idea of how die Pilgrims looked, they did not dress in just black and white. They liked flashy clothes and colorful materials with fancy trimming Even though die Atlantic Ocean is ooe of the smallest, it is believed to be the most treacherous to cross, the voyagers had a very choppy ride, and the journey took much longer than expected.
