As I See It by Shirley On Sept 8, emotions ran to extremes, from full blown high to a depressing low. All the excitement that had kept the adrenaline flowing for many months was suddenly drained and after all the votes were counted, some lost and some won. Trouble is, it is sometimes hard to figure out just who were the winners and who were the losers. The losers can now go back to their regular jobs, resume family life again and look forward to not having their past laid open for all to see and comment on. Neither will all their goals and ambitions and every move they make be discussed and tom apart. They will not have at least 50 percent of the public condemning everything they do or say. On the other hand, the winners, or the ones gelling the most votes, now have two more months of trying to impress everyone with their minds and flawless character, genius-typ- e attitude to gain a job that sometimes pays less than their regular job, (but don't forget the perks). This elected position may be over in a few years and cost more for the campaign than their term in office will give them back in salary. Maybe this is called unselfish dedication to your fellow man or a fulfilling life or maybe gives a desired need to have power over others or even a chance to be invited to a $100 a plate Governor's Ball and a chance to shake hands and rub shoulders with the more elite of the state or the country. Whatever it is, it brought out 40.05 percent of the 9,934 registered voters in Summit County. Not bad for a Primary Election, and we will get to do it all over again on Nov. 3. (Just two more months of those political advertisements.) Just Thoughts From Bessie's Collection Show me a man who walks with his head held high, and I'll show you a man who hasn't quite gotten used to his bifocals. Through a Mother's Eyes Hazel T. He never comes when I call." earth-shaking- by Howard Stephenson Tigers really don't change their stripes. Sometimes I'd like to believe that organizations which have traditionally demanded higher taxes and increased spending could actually see the light I'd like to believed that the teacher's union (UEA) could accept the idea of a free market educational system since most of their members support principles of freedom of choice. While the state's strategic plan which the UEA for education calls for endorsed management and parent choice of schools, the union is not acting to promote any of these. Ineaded, UEA President Lily Eskelsen says teachers will feel betrayed unless the plan produces significant new funding plans. In response to this plea, the Strategic Planning Committee in its next meeting will be considering optional sources of revenue such as eliminating federal deductibility on individual income taxes, expansion of the sales tax base through a new tax cm services or eliminating exemptions. For beginners, the union is calling for a "modest" $20 million "revenue enhancement". I have seen nothing to indicate the union is working to advance the most important parts of the strate gic plan the ones which don't require additional funding. In fact, as I worked to achieve site-basmanagement at my children's school, I discovered that the union has done virtually nothing to ed inform teachers of the vast possibilities provided by the plan without additional funding. . site-bas- ed Drug Free Community Comer What is Cocaine? Cocaine in its pure form is an odorless, white crystalline powder extracted from the leaves of the coca plant. The drug sold on the street is a mixture of the pure substance and various adulterants added to increase the quantity, and the seller's profit Street names include: "Coke" "snow", "tool", "White Lady", "blow", and "flake. Most users "snort" cocaine, that is, they sharply inhale the powdered mixture. Another form of the drug called "frcebase" is make by chemically converting the street drug into a basic form that can be smoked. Cocaine may also be injected. What is crack? Crack, another form of cocaine is very much like freebase. Crack is made by mixing cocaine powder with baking soda and water, and then cooking it. When dried, the resulting rocks or chunks are or light brown in color, and off-whit- e, Continued from Page 1A family in California. Two of their four sons have applied to and been accepted by Harvard University. They were told that their home education was a plus because they knew of the world as most high school students don't. The oldest boy had his own dairy goat business and maintained it for several years on his own. He did his own correspondence, accounting, and even wrote articles for a trade magazine. AH part of his home Another supporter of the Plan, the Utah PTA, has done little to help parents realize the opportunity for choices of schools, programs, and teachers which best suit their child's learning style. In fact, from testimony given by Utah's PTA President Joyce Muhlstein at the Legislature's Educational Choice Task Force, it is apparent that the stare PTA doesn't support parent choice of schools. Mrs. Muhlstein simply parroted propaganda provided by the Na- tional PTA and the National Education Association opposing choice. I wonder how many parents realize the state PTA is working to limit their freedoms. This election year once again shows how the public employee and teacher unions are targeting certain candidates for defeat because they did not go along with their demands. The litmus test for endorsing candidates is based on support for their funding bill which failed at the legislature and a candidate's position on parent choice in education. do about curriculum? There are several options available. It is pose sible to purchase a curriculum complete with texts and workbooks from several different companies. Another route is to create a unique curriculum of your own using integrated thematics or d similar ideas. There is also a school of thought that believes the child's own interests are the best source for curriculum. Again, you can find literature on whatever road you choose. One family mentioned the need for more interaction with the community. The need is felt for more opportunities to teach children the ready-mad- unit-base- it's funny how the union can run a smear campaign against a conservative candidate such as Rep. Rob Bishop, himself a teacher and prime candidate for Speaker of the House, and then fall all over themselves asking him to "forget the past" when he wins the nomination by 70 percent at the convention. The union doesn't like Bishop because he won't bow to their demands for higher taxes and he supports market-- based schools. The UEA and the public employee union with extensive funding and a vast army of volunteers are conducting smear campaigns against other candidates, including my State Senate Race which they label "the most crucial primary race in the entire stale." Summit County Special Notices produce a "cracking" sound when the flame hits them. Users generally smoke crack using a water-coole- d pipe, since the substance at very high tempera- only bums tures. How dangerous is cocaine? Use of cocaine is risky in all forms. When cocaine is used, very large doses reach the brain within seconds, increasing the risk. When snorted, even small amounts of cocaine in sensitive individuals may be enough to cause convulsions that can result in heart and respiratory failure, even death. Is cocaine addictive? Yes. Cocaine is an addictive drug. An addicted animal will prefer cocaine to food even if starved. Virtually no one who becomes addicted to cocaine ever thought they would. Join your neighbors in the fight against the illegal use of alcohol and other drugs. Home School... school experience. What does a home school family My Corner POSTAL IDENTIFICATION NO. 525640 joy of service, learn about careers, professions and hobbies of fellow citizens. A lot of mothers have wondered at the pressure of having the kids home all day. Home schooling parents feel this is a valuable lesson in parenting. If the kids are busily pursuing knowledge and are interested in what they arc doing, they are a joy to have at home. If they are forced to do something they aren't interested in or don't comprehend, there arc a lot of discipline problems. To quote from Reed Bensen's Dissertation on Home Education, "Before I established the home school I was mediocre and limited in my life and the influence I had on my family reflected it. The good Lord presented me with his "sport" of home teaching. I met the challenge and shattered the preconceived notion. My capacities were enlarged... "But most importantly of all my family has drawn closer in love. I have a better understanding of my own children because of the contact I had with them in teaching, and I love and appreciate my husband more because of the support and help he's given me in this endeavor. Home teaching. There were limes I thought the price too miserably high, but in the final analysis, as I sit here in the middle of the benefits of my efforts, I realize that a man will pay the price if he wants the prize." Home schoolers do not try to duplicate the public school classroom. That would be impossible. On the other hand, no public school classroom can duplicate the joy and love that comes from sharing education and acquiring knowledge with your own child. The home education movement has been described as an epidemic in our society. Possibly, it is an idea whose time has come.
