Antelope Island State Park Third Annual Buffalo Roundup Totals The overall condition ot the buffalo roaming Antelope Island has improved, Utah Division of Parks and Recreation and Antelope Island State Park personnel found at the third annual Antelope Island buffalo roundup. The roundup was held Saturday, Nov. 4. Personnel from the Division of Parks and Recreation and the Division of Wildlife Resources, along with 33 horseriders, and also volunteers from Utah State University participated. They rounded up and worked through the chutes more than 400 buffalo. Approximately 40 buffalo were not captured. State personnel found that overall the herd has grown in size. The total number of buffalo on the island was estimated at 457 this year. This year 417 buffalo were rounded up. The total consisted of 258 females and 159 males. Six buffalo were injured this year, compared to 11 in 1988. The general condition of the herd was described as excellent by state personnel this year, an improvement over the good condition the herd was. listed as being last year. Weights were also up over the previous year. Calves weight increased 110 pounds from 1988. Ninety percent of the buffalo had increased in weight There were 305 animals blood tested for an ongoing genetic study concerning a special allele first discovered during the 1987 roundup. Eight known alleles had been found in buffalo herds throughout the United States and Canada. A ninth allele was discovered in the Antelope Island herd. Due to the unique bloodline, the Board of Parks, and Recreation initiated a moratorium on the sale and hunting of buffalo on Antelope Island during 198?. A buffalo hunt will be held in December of 1990, and six permits wijl be issued. Five of the permits vyill be for Utah residents only. A drawing will be held for the permits. Cost of the permits will be $802. Both resident and nonresident hunters will have a chance to obtain the remaining permit. Division of Parks and Recration and Division of Wildlife officials are currently deciding how the final permit will be issued. Dates when hunters can apply for the permits and when the drawing will be held will be announced in a Division of Wildlife Resources proclamation that will be issued in February, 1990. mm American Heart Association WERE RGHDNS FOR OURUFE J |
