Kamas Utah Stake President Ry-dalc- South Summit Senior Citizen's Receive Their New Van h, Although there were a number of historic sightings of Rocky Mountain goats in the higher elevations of Northern Utah prior to 1930, this species largely disappeared from die state by 1940 due to overharvest and other facton. However during 1967, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resouces began a program of reintroduction for this unique species with a release of six individuals in the Twin Peaks area of the Northern Wasatch Mountains. Additional transplants were conducted during the period 1981 through 1986 at Timpanogos, Lone Peak, ML Olympus, and Ml Holly on the Tushar Range in Southern Utah. Rocky Mountain goats were not introduced to the Uinta Mountains until the summer of 1987, when eight animals were transplanted from the Lone Peak herd to Bald Mountain on the Minor Lake Highway. During 1988, a supplemental plant of 17 goats from Olymlpic National Park in the state of Washington was released at Bald Mountain to increase the size of the herd, and expand the gene pool. Permits have been issued for the harvest of Rocky Mountain goats since 1981, but the Uinta Mountain herd is not large enough for hunting at the present time. On Nov. 13, 1989, Brian stenhnlme reported seeing a Rocky Mountain goat along Interstate 80 neat the Wanship Exit just south of the East Wanship Road underpass. Wildlife Resources personnel were contacted and responded to the scene. The animal was identified as goat Number 106, which was a billy introduced to the Uinta Mountains during the supplemental transplant of 1988. This errant goat is the same animal that wandered into Carl Bans bam during the late summer of 1988. The Summit County Commissioners have been approached by Dr. Wain Allen with an official request for assistance in setting up a clinic in the South Summit area. The Commissioners are interested and concerned with the health care availability to the South Summit residents and have asked the Health Board to negotiate with Dr. Allen on his requirements.
