An older puppy, if left with his mother too long, will have problems adjusting to humans. Plan to be around for a few days. Puppies need to get acquainted with your smell, so hold them often by picking them up with both hands, supporting them under their chest and rear in a reassuring manner. Too much fondling and petting will confuse your new pet. Let them make their own advances. It may be days before they feel at home and only then will they want. to play. Name a puppy immediately or calmly, treating him gently without grabbing or moving suddenly. Acquaint your pet with its eating, sleeping and illimination areas. A cat needs an area to sleep where it can feel secure. Later it may find its own place to sleep. The independent actions of a cat often mask a real need for companionship, so reassure your kitty that you will be there when needed. Respect the animals right to be undisturbed whenever it seeks its bed for a rest and when it is eating its meals. Dont forget to talk to them often. They may not understand your words immediately,' but your friendly tone of voice will help to give them confidence. 1987.
