The girls sang a number of songs, and seemed to make the shoppers get into the Christmas spirit. Tim chorus is not large in number, but is very iris Scab the tagairs The North Summit Girls' Vanity basketball team scalped the Union Cougars on Dec. 18, on the Braves home floor. Starting for the Braves were Meianee Brooks, Merilee Brooks, Rach-ell- e Jenkins, Milleson Pace, and Susan Osmond. The Braves came on strong in the tint quarter fouling out. The Bnves continued on to win it, High scorer was Meianee Brooks with 27, followed by Milleson Face with 12. Milleson, Susan, Lori and Joy added to the rebounds while Merilee and Meianee combined for 20 steals. Congratulations I Rachclle pressing and playing tough defense. The Cougars were a very physical team, and the Braves had to work hard to get the rebounds and control the ball. Rebounds were Ryan Richins 10 and Kerry Stephens nine. Mark Rydalch was the leading scorer for South Summit with 31 and Jason Kearns dropped in 24 to boost their score. The North Summit J.V. boys basketball team lost to the South Summit Wildcats with a final 0 score, Dec. 19. The Braves were hot in the first (quarter with great shots from Todd Smith and Kyle Dearden. The score at the 73-6- 1. 50-6- North Summit Wrestles at Viewmont Tourney It has been a busy week for the wrestlers this week. Wednesday, Dec. 17, they wrestled Union here. Thursday, the 18th, it was at Rich with Evanston and South Summit. They ended the week in Bountiful at the Viewmont Invitational. This is a 16 team tourney. The teams were View- mont, American Fork, Bear River, Springville, Weber, Sky View, Bonneville, Bingham, No- rth Summit, Highland, Woods- - The Varsity game started out close. The lead changed back and end of the first Quarter was tied In the second jquarter, the Wildcats took the lead; but, with 10-1- 0. Beau Morrills shooting, the Braves were only behind by six with the halftime score The third jquarter wasnt very 6. good for the Braves, Chad Willoughby made some good shots, but the Braves couldnt keep up to the Wildcats. The fourth jquarter was much like the third with both teams making some great shots. The Braves couldnt pull it off, however, 0 ending the game with a score. Better luck next time J.V. Todd and Lori 50-6- Blon-quist-13- 2, 5. Wrestle Cougars The Union High Cougars traveled to North Summit on Dec. 17 for a region wrestling meet to win The J.V. Braves started the meet with Chris' Piercy, Kendall Staples, and Grant Hull all winning with pins. The Varsity men winning were Gaylon Richins-pointWes 48-2- 3. s, N.S. Wrestlers Win Dual HHeet at Rich The North Summit Braves wrestling team won a double dual meet between the Rich Rebels, Evanston J.V. and the South Summit Wildcats, at Randolph on the 18th. Most everybody had two matches , Kyle Woolsey-pointand Yancey Staples-point- Bloniquist-pin- s, s. All the Braves put up a good fight and wrestled great! Were behind Good luck, men. you all the way. The Lady Braves trailed slightly in the second jquarter. Neither team controlled the lead in the third jquarter. But the Braves gained control in the fourth jquarter and took the lead until plagued by fouls. With five Braves fouled out, the Red Devils came back to win 62 to 56. The Junior Varsity Braves game started out close but Evanston pulled ahead to lead 28 to 17 at the half. The Braves battled back to try to close the Devils lead. Though the Devils lead was dwindling, so was the Help children to resist peer pressure to use drugs by supervising their activities, knowing who their friends are, and talking with them about their interests and problems. When parents take an active interest in their childrens behavior, they provide the guidance and support children need to resist drugs. Parents can do this by: knowing their childrens whereabouts, activities and friends. Working to maintain and improve family communications and listening to their children. Being able to discuss drugs knowledgeably. It is far better for children to obtain their information from their parents than from their peers or on the street. Communicating regularly with the parents of their childrens friends and sharing their knowledge about drugs with other parents. Being selective about their childrens viewing of television and movies that portray drug use as glamorous including the J.V. This was the Wain Allen, M.D. and Herb Lepley, F.N.P. The girls have been very busy during the holidays, getting ready for the Christinas Concert, the performance in the man, and just recently performing for the senior citizens of Coalville, Utah. Good job girls, and good luck with your future endeavors. by Angie Sargent Pep Assembly Raises Spirit The cheerleaders at North Summit High put on a pep assembly in anticipation of the big game between the Braves time and the Braves fell behind 50 to 46. The North Summit Freshmen took a commanding lead in the first half. The Red Devils battled back in the second half to tie the game. The lead shuffled. With seconds left on the clock, the Braves trailed by three points. A la?t minute three point attempt by Jennifer Jones from the top of the key failed. The buzzer to end the game sounded. The net swished but the three pointer from the corner by Jennifer Jones was too late for the Braves. The Red Devils ended up on top 49 to 46. All the Braves played tough and gave good efforts. Janalee Swensen and the Wildcats of South Summit All four classes participated in the class competition which was to see how many students each class could fit into a jump rope and still keep it going. The seniors were the winners of the jump rope contest The Pep Club put on a skit and the cheerleaders taught the studentbody a few new cheers. At the end of the pep assembly, the cheerleaders announced the new winner of the Spirit Stick! The freshmen were the winners by only three points over the seniors and juniors. It was a great pep assembly which raised a lot at school spirit. The cheerleaders would like to thank the Pep Club for all the time and hard work they put into making . the assembly a success! After wrestling Friday, North Summit had three wrestlers in the Saturday finals. They were Wes Gaylon Richins-12and Yancy Staples-18Wes placed fifth in his weight division and Yancy took sixth. IBraves Lose An exciting, but upsetting game took place at the North Summit stadium on Dec. 19. The Braves lost to the South Summit Wildcats. The Bnves looked hot the first half and their fans thought they would win, and they would have another win on their record, but they were shocked when the Wildcats took control of the last half of the game and blew the Braves away. In addition, parents can work with the school in its efforts to fight drugs by: encouraging the development of a school policy g with a dear , message. Supporting ' administrators who are tough on drugs. Assisting the school in monitoring students attendance and planning and chaperoning school sponsored activities. Communicating regularly with the school regarding their childrens behavior. The signs of drug use can be changing patterns of performance, appearance, and behavior may signal use of drugs. The items in the first category listed provide direct evidence of drug use; the items in the other categories offer signs that may no-dru- indicate drug use. For this reason, adults should look for extreme changes in childrens behavior, changes that together form a pattern associated with drug use. Signs of drugs and drug paraphernalia: Possession of drug related paraphernalia such as pipes, rolling papers, small decongestant bottles, or small butane torches. Possession of drugs of evidence of drugs, peculiar plants, or butts, seeds, or leaves in ashtrays or clothing pockets. Odor of drugs, smell of incense or other cover-u- p scents. Identification with drug culture: Drug related magazines, slogans on clothing. Conversation, and jokes that are preoccupied with drugs. Hostility in discussing drugs. Signs of physical deterioration: Memory lapses, short attention span, difficulty in concentration. Poor physical coordination, slurred or incoherent speech; unhealthy appearance, indifference to hygiene and grooming. Bloodshot eyes, dilated pupils. Dramatic changes in school performance: Distinct downward not turns in student's grades to from from but Cs As Fs, just to Bs and Cs. Assignments not completed, increased absenteeism or tardiness. Changes in behavior: Chronic dishonesty (lying, stealing, cheating). Trouble with the police. Changes in friends, evasiveness in talking about new ones. Possession of large amounts of and money. Increasing in- appropriate anger, hostility, ir- ritability, secretiveness. Reduced motivation, energy, self-discipli- Dimin- self-estee- ished interest in extracurricular activities and hobbies. The North Summit FBLA chapter sponsored two community service projects for Christmas. The first project involved having all the members make a Christmas can which was placed in stores around the community. The money earned from the cans will be given to Nora Clark, a former business Sterling Scholar, who was injured in a serious car accident in October. The cans will be left in the stores during the holiday season so everyone who wants to will be able to donate. We would like to thank the members and the community for supporting the FBLA in this project. Sub for Santa was our second project this month. Through the Summit County Health Services Department, we received information on a needy family that we could help. The members and officers were divided into groups with the assignment to purchase gifts for the family members. We would agaiu like to thank everyone who has been involved in this service project It helped us to get in the true spirit at Christmas. Krissy Smith FBLA Reporter Riorllh Summit Middle School Christmas Season in the Middle School On Dec. 17, the North Summit Middle School presented a Christmas play to kick off the Christmas season. It began at 7:00 p.m. with the beginning band followed by the middle school concert band. After that the fifth graders sang a number of Christmas carols. To conclude the presentation, the 6, 7, and 8 grade students then presented the Hillbilly Christmas Play. The auditorium was packed and everyone seemed to enjoy it The studentbody and faculty felt that it was a big success. After all the hard work, some of the performers had the opportunity to present their parts once more as the dancers, under the direction of Cheryl Ovard, presented their dances in Heber City at two of the rest homes there. Twenty-fiv- e students traveled to Heber on Friday afternoon aad performed for the elderly at Ike Heber Valley Care Center and the Heber hospital for those who are there under long-tercate. The students said that they had a good time. One stadent stated that she hoped to stay in goad health the rest of her life. It mao a great learning experience for those who were able to go.
