Bangerters logic is in great is said the days after Christmas are a time when many fall into a deep depression. After planning and getting ready for Christmas for months or weeks or even days, suddenly it is all over. The excitement lasts just as long as it takes to open presents and have family dinner. Everyone leaves and all at once the house seems very quiet and empty. At this time many experience that old feeling. I guess it is all how your attitude toward this time of year has been tuned. I feel a great sense of relief. Not because it is suddenly quiet 1 1 and the families have gone home.but because we have all survived another year and were able to be together to enjoy Christmas. My children and their little ones are all healthy and were all able to celebrate another birthday during the year. Though we did have a bad accident during 198b. everyone seems to he doing well with no bad after affects. The men in the families have the capability to work hard to support their families, the wives are doing what they do best; taking care of homes, children, working and of course taking car of husbands. As we get older, we may feel our has already left without us, but just a glance around and we will find some who have slowed down more and are less fortunate that we are. You say you were old and you got older this year when you turned SO, 60, 70, 80 or more? How fortunate we are. Some lives are snuffed out after the first breath and we have had the opportunity to have lived, laughed and loved for so long. Im looking forward to 1987. There are going to be some exciting things happen. Its not too early to start planning vacations, gardening, starting new hobbies or enjoying the old ones we have neglected. Even some chores that arent necessarily fun, like house cleaning, fence building, house painting, lambing, etc., can be looked forward to as we know the end results can be an accomplishment and bring satisfaction. would be a Superman costume. As time passed, preparations were made with this one request in mind (since it had been repeated almost daily until Dec. 22). All of a sudden Junior started commenting on how dumb Superman was and all he wanted was a cowboy hat that happened to come with its own set of six shooters. Oh, well! I guess that this falls into "the best laid plans of .mice and men" category. We finished up the last minute plans for the family celebration. Presents were wrapped. Food was prepared. Relatives were invited to share Christmas with us. The tree and decorations were readied for the traditional Christmas Eve decorating session. Gift baskets were stuffed with goodies and presents for friends and neighbors. Then the big night arrived. All the kids were so anxious about the brightly wrapped presents. Gentle coaxing to allow just one present each failed. Every time we turned our backs, curiosity took over. We heard the subtle rattling, the soft rustling of paper, and once in vhile we caught the culprits in the act. Now the little ones couldnt stand the suspense any longer and begged to go to bed so morning would seemingly come quicker. By 8:30 all was quiet. The older children, my wife and I sat disarray as far as his tax proposal goes. On one hand he seems to be saying, if you dont own a car, you don't pay the increase in the gas tax. If you dont smoke, you don't pay the increase in the cigarette tax. However, if you don't use the school system, you pay and pay. If you are single, a young married, a childless couple or a senior citizen, you are going to pay through the nose for education. I am unable to see his logic in raising the dependant allowance to benefit large families. These are the very people that are overburdening the system and should pay the bulk of the people breeze through the Green, yellow, red, green, an engineering feat. The madness ings kids would never see a more plentiful Christmas for good feelings, merriment, presents or plain old fashioned fun. (It seemed that every relative we had sent something for the kids at least.) We were really blessed this year. About 2:30 a.m. we escorted the little ones back to bed explaining that it was too early to down to get up. Whew!!! Santa had almost been caught in the act rtf Christmasing. A repeat per- formance took place about 4:30 a.m. Finally, at 8:30 the onslaught was not turned back. We talked about the Saviors birth and went through a number of traditions to help us keep Christmas mote than a day for presents. Then it was time to open and share presents with each other. After all the requests and the excitement generated by the gifts, Ill never forget the biggest surprise' as the gifts were opened. My two youngest didnt spend more than a second with the many nice gifts they received. Instead, they were tickled pink with the boxes and wrapping materials. They were literally entertained for hours on end. A few days later the presents were taken more seriously and lasted the average amount of time expected of any new toy, about ten minutes. It was a merry Christmas, and we hope yours was alsol ax. Common logic education would be to allow an exemption on the first two children in the family and none or reduced exemptions after that. That way the people using the system would pay a fair share. I hope and pray that some day in Utah, we will elect officials .that can think for themselves. Until that time, I guess the jingles, young married, childless and the elderly will just have to let them stick it to us for an education system that spends foolishly and produces miser- holidays with little stress most feel the increased pressure. He is further quoted as saying the movie was never meant to be for little kids and that he did try to stop the marketing of the Rambo toys. The National Coalition on Television Violence (NCTV) is not so much concerned with who is to blame, as they are with the increase in TV violence in general. Violence in cartoons and the toys they are associated with has increased sales of war toys 700 percent since 1982. Although jome critics place a large part of the blame for war toys on RamboStallone movies, the NCTV is not so specific. In fact, the NCTV reports that cartoons are some of the worst offenders when it comes to d promoting violence. . War-relate- cartoons whether they be robots, wrestlers or soldiers average 48 acts of violence per hour. According to Dr. Ann Austin, a child development specialist in USUs college of family life, war toys have always been popular but there seems to be a more sadistic edge to them now. The bubble gum cards "Garbage Pail Kids are an example. She.. says they show kids being brutally cut up and decapitated. Austin says the new toys are marketing not only heroes, but also enemies. The toy companies are defining who thsj enemies are. They are usually someone different. It might be someone of a different nationality, color or from a different planet. She says the stakes in cartoon wars are also much higher than they used to be. Entire planets are being blown up and wars are being fought for control of the universe. . Stakes are also high for the mastery of the market place. According to the NCTV statistics, 1 1 of the 20 best selling toys this year have violent themes. |
