Each year, thousands of teenagers from every part of the world do just that: They acquaint themseli - ves with foreign countries as unofficial ambassadors and exper- - !! Many flowers were given sweethearts. Some kids even got them from secret admirers, girlfriends and for their mothers. Overall it turned out great! Thanks to all who participated and to . Marselle Williams, Lesa Glover, Becky Downard and Lisa Clark for helping. to conform to these new standards, and would they please try and accomodate mine. When I finally realized that I wasnt going to change a whole nation's way of thinking, life became . a lot easier. It came ' gradually, after talking to a friend who took time out from her own problems to help me with mine. I 'realized that I was .there to learn. As I look back on the year 1 spent as an exchange student, 1 realize that I have learned more about myself from thinking back on that year than I learned in the extremely conservative society process of living it. We learn from our mistakes, although sometimes from a fairly liberal society. I was ready to try out my new self and it takes a long time to realize thast there were mistakes. If I had the my newly socially acquired ideals, but my new society was stopping chance to do it all again, I would.. I me from doing this. I began to feel learned more in, that year than many people learn in a lifetime. I claustrophobic. I was unable to do learned a second language and without several duenanything another culture. But most impornas, or chapperones, and seeing tant of all, I learned to care about anyone of the opposite sex outside and have respect for another of the home was strictly forbidden. 1 tried to peoples feelings and another way explain, to no avail, that where I came from, I could see a of life. What will these- unofficial ambassadors find on their arrival to the great unknown? They will find a culture that' is strikingly different from their own. It was extremely difficult to fit in to the Mexican female role and at the same time break the American stereotype that my predecessors had left behind. As a young teenager who wasnt sure who she was yet, 1 had been planted into an by Lori Jenson to know you! Since Valentines Day is such S special holiday for loved ones, the student council thought that it would be a nice thought to sell carnations that could be given as ' gifts.
