Probably since the discovery of fire, these timeless words have been exclaimed by countless children everywhere and answer- cd by Mothers classic reply, v"WHAT!?l AGAIN!?! ii In the 1950s, during my childhood, we often had bake sales for school, church, and community as a primary means of raising funds. My mother, good spent that she was, usually abliged with homemade pizzas. Not your ordinary pizzas, these were works of art sculpted from "made from scratch" pizza dough, smothered in my mothers own special topping of tomato sauce, cheese, meat, and. lots of lots of sweet green and red peppers from our garden. More likely than not, Dad found some excuse to get Mom out of the kitchen and made the pizza himself. We had to watch him, though, because he would rather Mom, I use hot peppers than sweet this was not always appreciated by bake sale customers! As good as the pizzas were, the most requested item from our kitchen were pepperoni buns. Im not sure from whence pepperoni buns originated, but you could buy them almost anywhere food was served in my hometown of chopped onions, garlic, salt, pepper, tomato sauce or past, and a little sugar, or else use a commercial type of Sloppy Joe filling. Dont make it to spicy! The pepperoni provide plenty of that! Pepperoni buns are excellent to. take on hiking or hunting trips. Since the pepperoni has been treated with preservatives, they keep well. However, you will will neighboring towns). They cost a dime back then and if you wanted ' them split open with meat sauce 20 on them, they were cents. The only thing better : than that was having, a Mend to ' hare it with! observe that jerky--is section of the store. Therefore, care should be exercised in keeping the buns relatively cool. If you dontplan to use them up in 24 hours, refrigerate them in a plastic bag or container. They never seem to last more than one day at our house! PEPPERONI BUNS . Prepare the pepperoni. Buy the ogc sticks of pepperoni. Mast po)peronis are covered with a skin. If it peels off readily, remove the skin. If it's really difficult to take off. leave it on. Some skins are meant to be eaten, depending on the brand of pepperoni. Cut pepperoni into strips about 3 to 4 inches long and li thick. You can usually get anywhere from 8 to 12 strips from one stick, depending mi what size bun you want to make. If you want a large bun, make the strips longer or thicker, or put two thin strips together. For a daintier bun, make 'them short and slender. You may have to experiment in order to get the right proportion of dough to pcpp&roni. Your mouth shouldnt have to search for the pepperoni by eating through a lot of bread! bread Use either a dough or make your own. (2 loaves of dough and 2 large sticks of pepperoni should produce at least 2 dozen buns.) Let the dough rise once. Punch down and divide into halls the size of a small lemon. Stretch each ball into a flattened u.al. Place a pat of margarine in center of oval. Place pepperoni strip in center, also, and fold edges of dough around pepperoni to form a roll. Pinch and seal seams so that juices will not run out during baking. Pepperoni is entirely concealed. Line up rolls on greased cookie sheet with sides touching. Let rise until approx, double in bulk. Bake at 400 degrees for about 15 minutes or until golden brown. If buns arc browning too fast, cover loosely with foil last 5 minutes. Remove from oven and rub a stick of margarine over tops and sides of buns to make a soft crust Now you have Pepperoni Buns. PAST News from the.
