Combining efforts with area ski professionals and the Denver Children's Hospital, a program of specialized ski instruction for amputee servicemen and children began. During the Vietnam conflict, The 52 Association conducted its first amputee ski event in Winter Park, Colorado for patients at Fitzsimons Ahny Mediqal Center. The success of this venture set the precedent for an annual handicapped ski program at Jack Frost Mountain, Pennsylvania, now the largest event of its kind on the East Coast. The 52 Association, organizes to aid wounded veterans returning from World War II, a..d Seven Eleven, are sponsoring a Handicap Ski Clinic at the Park City ski area, January Second through Seventh. About 300 physically handicapped people, many of them missing a limb, are expected to attend the clinics and compete in various skiing events. Handicapped skiing began in the 1940s in Austria and soon spread to the United States by word of mouth. Twenty years later organized programs began to spring up in U.S. skiing areas. Particularly influential in the 60s was the Flying Outrigger Amputee Ski Club of Portland, Oregon, which with the Chamber of Commerce and nearby Timber-lin- e Lodge, sponsored the first National Amputee Ski Championships. Held on Mt, Hood in 1964, the competition drew three and four track skiers from as far away as Pennsylvania. Skiing's potential Ski Racing Championships held at Winter Park, Colorado. In 1981 Allen was chosen for the U.S. Disabled National Ski Team and in 1982, the U.S. Ski Team invited him to attend the World Championship in Leysin, Switzerland where he won two gold and a bronze medal. By winning two first places, and one third place, he became the World Champion Handicapped Skier.
