Show May r s 15-M- ay 21, 1980 FOCUS ' . r; .. .. 77 Ji -- One of the saddest arguments I've ever heard is when a biologist is reduced to defending the existence of another creature on the grounds that its life is helpful, useful or necessary to our own. Porpoises, sea slugs and snail darters may have purposes on the planet neither obvious nor directly related to our own. It is not enough, for example, to try to save woodpeckers from our government's forest spray programs because the birds eat bugs that eat trees that we build our towns with. In order to live with nature rather than in spite of her, we need an entirely different outlook and spirit of values; a world-vie- w that sees life itself as marvel and reason for existence. A new gentleness in our own living that allows room enough for the whole of creation rather than just that small part which suits our own purposes might do wonders in reestablishing a human harmony with the planet. ... . |
