Show BISHOP AUGUST VALENTINE DIES word was received in brigham tuesday morning shortly after ten that bishop august valentine had died at the family home in salt lake city for a week or more bishop valentine had been suffering with la grippe and pneumonic developed his advanced age made hs condition all the more precarious and the end was not altogether unexpected ills his wife sophy valentine Is at present very ill with pneumonia and Is being cared for by her daughter florence august auguse Wient valentine Cne was born bom on cm the island of Dom bornholm holm one of the denish possessions august 27 1837 while lie he was yet in his teens he heard the gospel as taught by the latter day saints accepted it and came to utah I 1 in 1853 in john forsgrene Fors grens company lie he made brigham city ills his home and was one of the early pioneers of this place ile he was one of those wild who helped to make tile the roads build the bridges S and kill uie the snakes and experienced all 1 I 1 the hardships of the early settlers oi or the community in coop co op times he was employed in looking alter after the live stock of that institution ution and later engaged in the sheep business tor for himself with marked success but reverses reverses edme came and lie he was forced to give up his holdings in that line ile he then engaged in fruit raising here li ra in tills this city until a a little over a year ago when the family removed to salt lake and the bishop lias has spent his last days working in the temple in which labor he rejoiced in 1883 bishop valentine went over to denmark on a mission and remain ed there until 1883 1885 ile he was called to preside over the second ward a short time after his return home and served the people of that ward as bishop for 12 years or more il he had two wives mary houston housan whom lie he married in 1861 and by whom lie he had eleven children five of who astill live and sophy lie married in 1885 anve of whom are a re living as well as ills his wife sophy y valentine his first wife passed 1 into the other life in july 1908 j dishop valentine was a sturdy character honest in all that the term implies hard working and of a veryl very quiet disposition he was firm in its his convictions and true to ills his friends ile he leaves a heritage to alf hs 3 family in the form of a well spent life undertaker J NV V hoopes went down to salt lake tuesday noon and prepared the remains for shipment they will arrive in ill this city this afternoon and funeral services will be held to mazrow 1 l friday at one p in in the second ward chapel services Servi ees are being held in the thir ty erst ti ward chapel at aalt alt lake city this morning |
