GRACE BERNINI Publisher Editor Pick Christmas tree carefully Would you buy a loaf of bread that is not fresh or moist? The same holds true for Christ- mas trees. Youre not going to eat your tree, but a dry, old tannenbaum makes excellent food for fire. "Once needles dry out on a tree they do not easily en, even when the tree is placed in a stand with water," said Michael Kuhns, Utah State University Extension forester. "The best way to ensure that your tree is fresh is to buy from a local grower or from a retailer you tree should be placed in a sturdy stand that holds at least one gallon of water. A fresh tree can lose this much water a day. Old- fashioned small stands just dont hold enough water, he said. Place the tree away from heaters, furnace vents, televisions or other heat sources. re-moi- st- trust." trees sold in many Christmas tree lots may appear fresh, but they can be old and dried out, he said. To check for freshness, Kuhns said to gently pull on several If many come off, the tree is suspect. You can also lift the tree and strike the butt end on the ground. Again, if many nee- dies fall off of the twigs, the tree probably not fresh. Finally, pull off a couple of needles and break them to see if they are moist and fragrant. Theres no need to worry about old, unattached needles accumulated inside the crown. Though these needles can be Out-of-sta- te they do not indicate a poor tree. They can be easily removed. Once a fresh tree is pur chascd, keep it outside until you are ready to decorate it. If you store it in a place where it does- nt freeze, re-c- the bottom of the stump and set it in water. This opens the trees vessels. Keep it away from sun and wind to prevent drying. When you are ready to bring the tree in, he said to apply a fresh cut at the bottom of the stump one more time if it has been stored very long. Candles should never be used to light a Christmas tree or wreath. "A fresh tree that is watered daily can stay moist and safe for several weeks," he said. Trees used in public buildings shouldnt be displayed for more than 15 days. They should also be treated with a fire retardant solution, he said. .. ... Its also time for the Utah State Hospital and Wasatch Mental Health to ask for help from the community in providing Christmas for over 300 patients. These patients are virtually alone at Christmas. They have very limited contact with family and would receive little or nothing at Christmas without community support. The Forgotten Patient Christmas Project has been designed to help provide Christmas for these patients. Its success depends totally on community volunteers. There are a number of ways that we can use your help: we can provide you with the name and enough information to provide Christmas for a patient; money donations are accepted and hospital staff will do the shopping; some groups prefer to donate . ,tems or mre man one patient (socks, underwear, candy, etc.); we are always happy to hear from a volunteer and glad to work with you in trying new ideas. The Forgotten Patient Christmas Project is often the only touch of the Holiday spirit these patients experience. Please feel the spirit of giving this holiday season and sponsor a forgotten patient.
