Sandy Hunt, Utahs Used Oil Program Environmental Special- ist, told a steering committee June 15, the collection-beg- un simultaneously in Juab, Sanpete and Millard counties-h- as been met with a positive response from the community. In fact, the success in the three counties has prompted the state to make the collection available in other areas of Utah. In Juab County, the program will continue with a renewed public awareness effort, beginning in late June on radio and in local newpapers. "The word is spreading that used oil should be recycled rather than stored in large quantities or dumped on the ground, in waterways, or down sewers," Hunt said. Two Juab County merchants are designated oion centers Clover Creek Car Center, 155 North Main, Mona; and Parkin Motor Company, 131 South Main, Nephi. The state is looking for an appropriate place in the Eureka area. The program to collect and properly dispose of used lubricating oils is now paid for by a state fund obtained from a quart fee collected by merchants when new oil is purchased. The idea grew out of planning done by the Ash Grove Community Council, an organization of Mil- lard and Juab County community leaders, which has also sponsored used-tir- e collection program since 1993. The original three-counDIYer used 0 il collection program was financed by Ash Grove Cement Co. and a grant a baby that may appear to be in distress and be tempted to inter- fere. However, most of the time, wild parents are very good at solving the problems that come up without our help. After all, have been doing it a lot than we have. Many times what may appear to be a youngster abandoned by its parents is not at all as it ap- pears. Mule deer for instance, as a part of their daily routine, will deposit a young fawn in the deep or shrubs and leave for a period of time to feed. The young deer is almost perfectly camouflaged and has no scent at all to alert a predator to its presence. The fawn is perfectly safe and the mother returns periodically to check on the baby and feed it. Many young deer have been taken from the wild by a well meaning person when found supposedly by its mother. Usually, removing a wild baby from die wild is the same thing as pronouncing a death sentence upon it. Wild animals generally do not respond well to human intervention and do not make good pets. Thats not to say that there is never a time when we should intervene but most of the time wild animals are more than capable of taking care of their CARS from by state officials rates.
