GEORGE — When authors Ronald Walker, Richard Turley and Glen Leonard collaborated to write a new history of the Mountain Meadows Massacre, drawing on records previously unavailable and attempting to provide a level of detail never before accomplished, it was a cinch that the book would have a readership in Southern Utah. Even so, apparently no one anticipated that it would sell out three times in all St. George's bookstores during the past month, before being made available through a second printing shortly after the event's anniversary on Barnes & Noble invited the authors to visit St. George on Wednesday, Sept. I checked it out and became enamored with the story When McManus and his wife retired they, like so many others, found St. George the ideal place to settle down and relax. It was only afterward, he said, that “I realized it was only (about) 18 miles up the road” That was when an odd incident occurred that only heightened his interest in tragic events that took place more than 150 years ago. McManus visited the site, and there encountered a man in uniform whom he thought was a park ranger. Instead, it turned out to be a man named Richard Sweet, who had done diplomatic service, he said, and who had spent an extensive amount of time studying the massacre. “He took me over to his pickup and pulled out his binder — this thick; McManus said, indicating with an ample spread of his fingers. “He answered every question I had by opening his binder and turning the pages.” According to McManus, he asked if it would be possible to copy the contents of the binder and Sweet told him no, that he was dying of cancer and would take it with him to his grave. “About six weeks later, I saw his obituary, McManus said. “I felt like God was saying to me, ‘OK, Brady, I'm going to let you talk to someone no one knows about. ... That was a real moment. I'll never forget it.’ Walker, Turley and Leonard's work is more easily preserved and available eSee AUTHORS on pg. 26 |
