Wal-Mart donates to county school district BY ALYSON VAN DEUSEN alyson@thespectrum.com HURRICANE — Seven Washington County schools received thousands of dollars from Wal-Mart on Thursday at the Wal-Mart Distribution Center. The retail giant awarded $9,000 in all to schools throughout the district. “We know you use the funds wisely to grow and learn, said Keith Knowles, general manager for the center. Arepresentative from each school told employees at the distribution center what they would do with the award-. ed grant. funds, including Heritage Elementary School, Pine View High School, Lava Ridge Intermediate School, Washington Elementary School, Millcreek High School, Diamond Valley Elementary School and Hurricane High School.Most schools had plans to use the funds for literacyrelated projects. Jeannie Robinson, the counselor at Heritage Elementary, runs a pro: at her school where students can “buy” books with school “money earned through academic achievement and good behavior. Washington Elementary plans to use the money for an interactive read-aloud for students and parents to read together and Lava Ridge Intermediate School will use its grant to purchase additional books for low-level readers. “We are appreciative of what you do for the schools at Washington County; said Pam Graf, foundation specialist for the district. “These funds help children’ Wal-Mart gives money through grants and donations to Southern Utah's schools and communities. Each store, distribution center and transportation department gives $25,000 to the community each year, said Eric Lasher, general transportation manager for Wal-Mart. “Wal-Mart donates $296 million each year, nationally; Lasher said.
