Show insatiable appetite for profit at the public's expense. International Uranium Corporation has been cited for new infractions that need to be checked out. San Juan County Commissioners: As normal, the two Republican commissioners in San Juan County again are coddling International Uranium. They have abandoned the golden opportunity to work for human rights and to protect the environment. Uranium mining: There are new proposals to revive uranium mining in New Mexico by developing three new mines near Crown Point and Church Rock. The mines would contaminate a drinking water supply for 15,000 people, most of them Navajos. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has licensed the mines to a subsidiary of Uranium Resources, Inc. We need to form a coalition of sorts to oppose the development of these mines. We could begin by supporting the efforts of the Southwest Research and Information Center, Citizens for Alternatives to Radioactive Dumping, Concerned Citizens for Nuclear Safety, and Nuclear Watch of New Mexico. We'v ¢ known for years, have we not, that the government and the nuclear industry have continuously lied to us. This disclosure comes as no surprise to me, to the downwinders still alive, and to many of you. Lies, lies, and more lies? Testing of ingredients of nuclear waste has always been one of our great concerns. Now comes an article in the New York Times, Sep. 22, 2000, reporting that federal authorities said that thousands of environmental safety tests conducted at a number of Superfund locations in Texas and the west from 1994 to 1997 may have to be repeated because the company that performed the tests falsified the results. Just what projects in Utah, if any, that We've known for years, have continuously lied to downwinders still alive, and may need to be repeated were not disclosed. have we not, that the government and the nuclear industry us. Corporate accountability: We need to press for corporation accountability and to see that company officials tell the truth. If wrongs have been committed then apologies are in order and the involved company executives must be forced to resign. The mere firing of lower workers for infractions is not sufficient. Closing up shop: We know what will happen when THE SILVER GRILL 6 MARKET there is no more profit for International Uranium. The corporation will just close shop and move on leaving us with the deadly waste. It is not really a matter of if they will, it's a matter of when they will.
