Show much of the land as open space and rich environmentalists will reach for their checkbooks. They'll swear that all the homes will be invisible from the valley below. They'll convince the local politicians that the project is good for the county and good for THE ZEPHYR the tax base. And they’ll tell all of us lowly middle-class Grand County citizens that we will all benefit from the project because rich people will spend a lot of money that will end up in our Volume 12 Number 4 October/November 2000 pockets. They'll tell us that this project will improve the quality of our lives. It is a damn lie. This community keeps getting whittled away and whittled away and sometimes I think it’s already too late to save anything. Then another greedhead project like this comes along and I remember how very much is left that we can still lose. ae THE NUTSHELL With Steve Russell & Jim Stiles eon on the Power of People; Too many Cops, Legacy Highway South..Kudos on the skateboard park. But we don’t have to lose this one. Just as we did 12 years ago, if this community really wants to fight the Cloudrock project, I think it has a fighting chance. But it’s going to take an organized effort by a lot of citizens. The 1988 Referendum is proof that people working together can accomplish great things. When there are no leaders in government, sometimes the people have to lead the politicians, and that’s what we have today-No leadership and no vision. The future is ours to shape. Or to ignore. Apathy is our greatest enemy. Speaking of Apathy... THE BIG ’G’ v. THE BIG ‘R’ I’ve always thought that the letters page of the TimesIndependent was a good way to measure local concerns priorities. For several weeks this summer, the T-I page jammed full of diatribes about the recently vandalized and was and subsequently restored Big G that’s painted on a cliff face north of town. Week after week the letters poured in, most of them outraged at this senseless act of destruction. You'd think the Big G represented the soul of the town. Frankly the Big G didn’t bother me; with the entire valley being turned upside down by trams and condos, this white painted letter felt pretty benign. And hardly worthy of inches and inches of editorial space. Then a few weeks ago, the T-I published a letter from Sandy © Hayes, of the National Alliance, a white supremacy group headquartered in West Virginia. Hayes takes credit for sending "hate literature" (by most people’s standards) to about 400 Moab homes last spring. In late August he wrote to commend the citizens of southern Utah for acquitting Jaric Robison of a hate crime in an alleged assault against an inter-racial couple last year in Moab. He said, in part: "There are a few people that couldn’t grasp the truth, but not everybody can. My work is not done, however, and since I am from Moab, the people will get even more chances...then they will have a release from the multiculturalism that affects even a small - town like Moab...there are many plans for the sleepy town of Moab." Sort of makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck, 6... POINTBLANK: Why I Don't Belong to SUWA or the Sierra Club By Owen Severance 9... In the weeks that followed, one...one Moab resident had the courage or the interest to reply; otherwise his comments have gone unchallenged. What’s.going on here? I don't believe for a moment that more than a handful of Moabites share Mr. Hayes’s racist attitude, but how is he going to know if we don’t tell him. According to his letter, Hayes is so encouraged by the response (or lack of one) that he intends to start a movement here. Just what Moab needs: a white supremacist storefront on Main Street. Sometimes I’m not sure where this town wants to be in ten years, but I know it doesn’t want to be side-by-side with the National Alliance. I hope my fellow residents will speak up and set the record straight. NEW ZEPHYR EMAIL ADDRESS!!! We'd rather switch than fight.
