Show estimation were over 600 ft long [some parts were not even backfilled nightly]. These excavations crossed intersections, and driveways, cut through drainage pans and storm sewer structures causing access and drainage problems for businesses and residents on Center and 100 West for the entire 5-6—that period just happened to have included Jeep Safari week. Donna stated “the city does try to ensure minimal disruption” HOW? Did I miss something? Providing service requires one actually doing something rather than just trying to do it. Credit for trying is one thing, but it is not how performance is judged. In the real world results are what counts. Other Moab street closures have been done so swiftly that business operators on the block were unaware that their customers could no longer leave their business's parking lot. No one at City Hall could find time in 48 hours to notify the business owners? Doesn't the Dr. Mudd, unaware of the assassination or Booth’s role in it, set the bone as any good doctor would do. But in the vindictive aftermath of the murder, Mudd was arrested and convicted as a conspirator and was reviled around the nation. No epithet was as severe as to be told, "Your name is Mudd." Almost a decade later, Mudd was exonerated, pardoned and released from a federal prison...JS Ken 6 Jane Sleight’s PACK CREEK RANCH public deserve reasonable and prudent consideration if not courtesy? A Coun try Inn | G Guest Ranch Donna's letter also stated “Sometimes it takes a citizens helping hand or watchful eye for us to provide the level of service we would like”. Who is the “we” She is referring to? Certainly the public seems leftout. Helping hands and watchful eyes are OK but don't call City Hall with a complaint or suggestion. The philosophy is one of status quo. I have talked to the Public Works Director; he does not want changes and rudely refuses to discuss alternatives. I have talked to the Mayor about these issues and she says that she only recommends appointments and has no responsibility for the crews or the department heads or their policies. Her honor defends the actions of the city; not once did the mayor consider that there could be a better alternative next time. In other words, don't give us feed back, we don't want or need to change. I have talked to councilmen about these issues and basically they say council follows the recommendations " , & Ht," of the staff and the Mayor on policy matters and position appointments. There seems to be something wrong with the picture. Basically, the Mayor claims no responsibility . The City Manager does not seem to hold the high cards in dealing with errant department following council recommendations direction. to Yet politicians they who heads and [the administration then send us and staff, and and our the claims she is mayor] make complaints back to administration or the mayor. Really, who is watching the hen house? I doubt I am alone in questioning this type of “round robin” response or poor operational performance. Change, if it is to come, will have to come from the city council that Moab residents will a” f elect in November. EE Sincerely, John Hartley Moab Dear Stiles: _ - Greetings and hats off to ya for the "Go Ask Somebody Who Gives a Damn" issue (Vol. 11, No. 13). As usual, us readers stuck down here in lovely Dixie find your presentation a fun read (and informative, too). Is that Ken Sleight in the Superman suit? I had no idea! However, on a more somber note, I must take issue with one tiny bit of weirdness, perhaps only a casual oversight by one of your otherwise bright writers: Lonesome Liz from Cedar City. Now don’t get me wrong—I like Liz and her ruminations of a “pathetic and lonely" personal existence in the bosom of Utah. Rather, it’s her misuse of a common, if not fully understood, tidbit of Americana that is at issue; namely, the phrase "his name would be mud”... (paragraph 1 of her missive). Now Stiles, those of us steeped in the finer points of America’s rich cultural and ‘historical existence know that the correct use of said epithet is "his name is (or would be) "Mudd"; not "mud," as applied by Lonesome Liz. Perhaps not a big deal in spots like Cedar City or Moab, but certainly of much greater import in the swank setting of a Selma, Alabama, or Savannah, Georgia, to name a couple. Thus, in defense of decent journalistic correctness and persnickety realism, let the record reflect the truth regarding this slight but easy to fix faux pas by Ms. Liz and the Zephyr. As always, your fan... Ned Mudd Gar Ranch, Alabama Editor’s Note: Mr. Mudd is absolutely right, but has left it to me to ultimately explain this oftenused but seldom-understood expression. On the night of the Lincoln assassination in April 1865, John Wilkes Booth broke his ankle as he fled the stage after shooting the President. Later that evening and in great pain, Booth sought medical assistance from a Virginia doctor, Samuel Mudd. PL LAE wd Come Celebrate Thanksgiving at Pack Creek Ranch.
