Show I remember cigarette wrappers and wadded-up napkins tidily placed in my flowerpots, surrounding the geraniums, because they do not really have trash in Asmat. I remember Patti apologizing for not calling us about their visit earlier in the year...because she was, literally, lost at sea during a visit to Asmat. I remember that she confided in me that they were expecting us to be Hopi, and I wondered how it must have felt to arrive at a stranger’s house and find that even the little you thought you knew was not the case. I remember being glad, for a new reason, that we live with Navajo, Hopi, and Pueblo art and hoping it would help them to feel at ease, if not at home. I remember the living room filled to the brim the night before they left. A tarp is spread out on the floor, so that Alfons, Robie and Siprianus could finish the figure carvings they were making for Peter and me. (This is the first time I have ever seen “tree of heaven” put to good use.) Simultaneously, Donatus is stretched out on the couch napping, Yuven is watching the history of the atomic bomb on television while at the same time NORMA NUNN_ | (w) 435.259.5021 ~Contuy, (h) 435.259.7275 — amcmuamarmmccecss: 2] § ® At Quality Realty * 505 N. I remember Abraham singing a song, joined by the others at what I would call the chorus. He has an amazing voice. I remember being shown my own world through their cyes--newly appreciating its beauty and its wealth; newly embarrassed at its waste and consumption. There is more that I remember, that I think occurred because the Asmat are more in tune with the world, its balance, and what is ultimately important in this life. It is not for the telling here--it is still too private. When the Asmat have once again packed an amazing amount of stuff and a large number of people into a Chevy Suburban and are waving goodbye, we are at loose ends. The void left by these friends‘ absence is surprisingly large, given the brevity of their stay. It is suddenly too quiet, too ordinary, and too dismally grey here. I leave the cigarette ashes, wood chips, dirty plates and dishes, wadded up napkins, and unchanged beds to prolong their presence. I fear that if I clean too quickly all that will remind me of this experience will be a faulty memory. I do have the figure carving and a carrying bag they gave me as a gift. Hanging just inside our front door, the bag is woven of sago palm fibers decorated with beads made of bat bones and coix seeds, with cockateel feathers the circumstances that brought it into my home and feel, oh, so lucky.
