Safety Week June 5 has been designated as Home and Community Safety Week. The focus during Home and Community Safety Week is fall prevention. Our most vulnerable population, the elderly, will benefit from increased public awareness of ways to prevent falls in the home and community. Falls are the leading cause of home and community deaths, and the elderly are especially at risk. Falls caused or led to 15,400 deaths in America in 2000. More than half of those deaths (nearly 9,300) occurred as a result of falls in the home or on home premises. Another 6,100 deaths occurred as a result of falls in public places. While all age groups are vulnerable, 60 percent of deaths occur among people 65 and older. In Utah, we see similar trends. In 2000, 28 Utahns over the age of 65 died as a result of foils. Falls are the number one cause of injury-relate- d death for males 80 and older and for of females 75 and older. One-fourthose who sustain a hip fracture die within one year and another 50 percent never return to their prior level of mobility or independence. The Utah Safety Council offers these tips to help prevent foils in the home: Keep the floors clean . Reduce clutter and safely tuck telephone and electrical cords out of walkways. Clean up grease, water and other liquids immediately. Don't wax floors. Use non-eki- d throw rugs to reduce the chance of slipping on linoleum. Install handrails in stairways. Install grab bars in the bathroom (by toilets and in the tubshower). Make sure living areas are well lit to reduce the risk of tripping and foiling in the dark. Use a sturdy step stool with handrailswhen reaching storage places. This problem is expected to grow as the Nations population ages and health factors associated with aging increase the likelihood that a foil will result in a fatal or disabling fracture. To help make homes safer, the Utah Safety Council offers free home safety checklists to the public. To obtain additional information or to receive a home safety checklist, contact the Utah Safety Council at 0 ext 303 or (800) 3 (801) ext 303 when calling outside Metro area or visit the Salt r. utahsafetycouncil.org . rail-relat- ed th ' hii Lil Bit in Altamont, Utah Father's Day Baby Back Bib Special Choke of potato, com on the cob & fresh fruit.
