I figured I would never let it haplead over pen again. Union took a Park City, which was ranked No. 2 2-- 0 behind 2001 state champion. Carbon High. Once again Union was doomed with the Miners rallying to tie the game in the sixth and then put the Cougars deep in an old silver mine or at least pumped them down an oil well by blowing out the Roosevelt teams winning hopes with tons of runs in the seventh and final inning. singles plus a key error on a double play ball hurt the Cats in the sad inning. "Fool me once, fool me twice is what I thought, but I didnt let the Union baseball team take a bite out of me like Mike Tyson even thoughlwas tempted to watch Uintah square off against Union. I decided not to take a chance and let my ears do the work with the help of my headphone radio gear. Myeyes were focused on the Union softball game vs. Uintah in Roosevelt and after the Cougars lost I wished I had a blind fold available. (Union gained revenge later with a 13-- 1 win in Vernal.) Twice, I covered Union Highs boys on the baseball diamond, and stayed for the end because they were ahead. I just couldnt leave and both times I lost out as well as the Cougar squad. First, Union played Moffat County out of Craig, Colorado and appeared to have the game won when they needed just one more out to enter the victory column, but No Way Cats, Bats and Ratal! as Moffat rallied to pull off a Back-to-back ' where the score got worse and worse until a horrible 18--0 loss by the Cats had me wishing I had some ear plugs. Oneyearl was uttingon the Uintah side of the diamond when the Utes jumped out to a 9--0 lead, and then I noticed a dog on the field. I said, "If a dog shows up it is bad luck! A loyal Ute fan said, The beagle is on you field! I answered, The dogis by your dugout! After my comment, Uintah almost blew the game and just barely won by one run. The Ute fans gave me a dirty look and one said, Take your dog home! I dont think that dog would have helped Union in that 18-- 0 disaster unless it was the "Junkyard Dog (a former famous pro wrestler). My dad, Orlando Rachele, doesnt have a great nickname like the "Junkyard Dog," but he plqyed baseball along with his brothers, Eldon, iSapi and Guido for. Helper, Utahs, Ahiericah Legion tdamthatwonthite state titlesand several ruhriCT-u- p tro--' phies in the 1930s and 1940's. While checking out some old newspapers I discovered some wild baseball terms Helper heat Nephi, 11-- 6 in a 1936 Central Utah baseball game and the writer of the story said, Helpers willow wielders chalked up 14 hits. Willow wielders wouldnt work today because of all those aluminum bats. Sadly, Helper lost to a Salt Lake City team, 12-- 9 in the 1935 American Legion state title game and the reporter in the Helper Journal said, "The crowd of 1200 settled down to see a good shelling bee. I missed my chance. I should have said, "Uintah's willow wielders or maybe alum wielders chalked up 18 runs in an shelling bee! ; Maybe next season, Union will' "thwart those Utes just like Helper did to Brigham City in an American ' Legion state championship game in 1940. ed .
