Houston Scholarship: Trad Allred, $1,000 Claaaof 57 Scholarship: Brittnee Migliori, $1,000 professor addresses West Desert graduation USU By Lacey Morrill It was a pretty big shock when Virginia Exton got the phone call that would determine how she spent her Memorial holiday weekend. Exton, an English professor at the Utah State University Uintah Baain campus, drove six hours to the middle of nowhere, Nevada to address the West Desert High graduating class of six last Thursday. Odd, considering the students only knew her as a image that flickered over the ednet television for one hour, three times a week. Exton taught half of the graduating class three students English 1010 from Vernal, a location that waa over 300 miles away. It made me wonder who my competition was, Exton laughed. I waa surprised that they picked me. The three students that took the class must have talked the other three into letting me speak. While Exton may have been surprised, she also admits that she was pleased and a little bit flattered. Right after they called to ask me to apeak, I read an article in Time magazine called Howtoorderagradu-atio- n speaker, "said Exton. "I realised what an honor this was. Usually graduation speakers are governors." Exton thinks the students asked her to speak because she successfully established a personal relationship no small feat if one with them recalls none of the students had ever met their teacher in person. She attributes this success to her interactive style of teaching. Exton said students from remote sites felt included in her class because she gave them the chance to speak, ask questions, and be seen on air. "This helped the students in remote sites realize that they mattered to me, she explained. Obviously, the students were impressed by Extra's efforts to include them. Exton based her graduation speech on the theme chosen by the 2002 class of West Desert High, We must never be afraid to go too for because success lies just beyond. Exton said she focused on borders and rites of passage that each of ua must make. She told the students what they muBt do mentally to prepare for that time and told them to focus on the power ofthe written word. Because the nearest hotel was hundreds of miles away, Exton and her husband spent the night at a bunk-hous- e on a wildlife refuge. They said they also got a good taste ofsmalltown hospitality. Everyone made them feel welcome, and the school counselor fed them breakfast. I usually never know how to spend my Memorial Day weekend. Exton commented. This time was corn-eve- n pletely different."
