In both instrumental and vocal music, as well as drama, a Superior or I" is equivalent to an A, and is required to progress to the next level of competition. Chris had received a superior ratingfor his instrumental soloat the regional sokenaemble competition held on March 23 in Park City. Itis an extraordinary accomplishment. There are couple of hundred kids who go to region and out of those 200 maybe ten percent of them will go on to state. Out ofthose kids who go to state from all ofthe regions, only about one in five gets a superior at state, said Union High Band and Orchestra Director Sam Fernly. Chriscan say he is really the cream ofthe crop. Especially for a freshman to do that is really unusual. The music he plays has to be very difficult. He had just rave reviews from tlie adjudicators." Christopher performed an alto saxophone solo, "Carnival of Venice by Henry W. Davis. He was accompanied at the state competition by Roosevelt piano teacher Kris Davis, substituting for his regular piano accompanist, Union junior Catherine Murray. Fortunately, Mrs. Davis had already planned to attend to accompany her grandsons cello solo, which also received a superior rating. Christopher was also selected aa the 1 place winner in woodwind performance at this weeks Duchesne County School District Academic Excellence Fair. Earlier this year he was the district and region winner in original musical composition in the PTA Reflections arts competition. Chris began playing the saxophone in fifth grade band class and has played in numerous school and community musical groups ever since. Currently, in addition to the Union High jazz, concert, and pep bands, Chris performs with a mixture of adult and student musicians in the local swing and jazz big band UintaJazz? and a saxophone quintet called Saxtet. lieving in yourself, overcoming dis- couragement, feing a team player, und Betting positive goals to work s I e and lis;l the xiwer they have within tin nisei ves to at whatever they chisise. Annual County Tax Sale Over 1 00 parcels expected auction block on back-ta-x By Susan Collier Property owners five years in ar-rears on their property taxes have until Wednesday, May 29 at 5 p.m. to pay tlie overdue taxes and retain their property. If they dont pay the bereft taxes in full by the deadline the prop-will be auctioned on Thursday, May 30, at 10 a.m. in the commission chambers of the Duchesne County Administration Building located at 734 North Center in Duchesne. They must pay for the taxes with secure flinds, such as cash, cashier's check, or money orders. Personal checks are not acceptable. The parcels that aie being auc- tioned are published through the month of May in the Uintah Basin Standurd. County ClerkAuditor Diane Freston will conduct the sale and state the amount of taxes, penal- ties, interest, and administrative costs on the parcel being offered for sale. When the figures are totaled their sum constitutes the lowest accept- - able bid. Successful bidders will have to pay for their acquisition with cash or other secure fundB. Any property which does not re-ceive a bid during the sale reverts to the county which then becomes the owner ofthe property. Ifthe sale price exceeds the minimum bid, the county sends the excess funds to the property owner. In the event the owner can't be located the excess money becomes part ofthe state surplus fluid. One hundred, twenty-thre- e prop- erties are listed for sale for delinquent taxes, well down from the original 280 properties that had outstanding tax bills in February. According to Freston, most of the assessments will be paid by owners or mortgage companies prior to the sale. "We should be down to a few pieces in the county and the ones in Vista Valley and Cove Acres, predicted Freston. Anything that's worth anything gets paid. Some property owners relinquish their properties because they discover that their parcel is not large enough to develop. Typically county code re-quires that there be a least five acres before the owner can build. This year there are 14 parcels being auctioned from Cove Acres Subdivision and 30 parcels from Vista Valley Estates, Small parcels in Vista Valley Estates -- were given away as part of a promo-ert- y tion, and many owners have failed to pay the taxes on the gift they are unable to develop. The largest amount owed is $11,292.79 for a one acre lot in Roosevelt and the least amount owed is $78.87 for .2 acres in Vista Valley Estates. The total assessment for the majority of properties falls well below $1,000. The largest parcel contains 120 acres and the smallest is a mere .01 acre. Almost 60 percent of the proper- ties are owned by persons living in other states or corporations located in other states. Only the owners ofseven properties actually have Basin area addresses listed on the tax roles. An Ogden area investment dub currently owns two ofthe properties.
