The program is baaed on the book of the same name written by Him Bennett, whoee brother Robert was a casualty ofthe British troopship, HMS Rohna. The battleship sank during WWII on Nov. 26, 1943, ofTthe coast of North Africa. The documentary focuses on the experiences of the families and next of kin back home in America during World War II. TechSgt. Erwin Wameke, ofPeirce, Nebraska, was a passenger on the ship. Wameke is the double-cousito Esther Roberts, of Roosevelt. On Nov. 26, 1943, the British transport Rohna was in the Mediterranean headed forIndia carrying almost 2,000 soldiers. The ship was struck in the engine room by a secret missile, Hs 293, dropped by a German Heinkel 117 bomber. The Rohna lost all power, caught fire and began to list. Hundreds died instantly, and in the end 1,015 GIs had died, the greatest loss at sea of UR. personnel in WWII. Wameke was rescued after floating in the Mediterranean Sea for a couple of hours. ur The documentary opens with GIs boardings troopship like the Rohna, and contains scenes of an air battle, and footage about the Heinkel 117 aircraft and the Ha 293 tactical radio guided missile that delivered the tal blow to the Rohna. Conditions aboard the ship, and the recognition of the heroic rescues by the crew of the USS Pioneer, are portrayed. Secrecy in wartime and so long after the war is addressed. Tentative time for the Jan. 6 show on the History Channel is 8 p.m. Viewers should check the weekly TV guide for the correct time. n Eventually, after regrouping, Wameke and other survivors continued on to China where he became a of the 23H Group of the 74 ter Squadron known as The Flying Tigers. He was an airplane mechanic serving as a flight chief until the end of WWII. After the war, Wameke farmed east of Pierce until his death following surgery in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Omaha. After reading Professor Carlton Jackson's book, Forgotten Tragedy, it was learned that the tail gunner on the German Heinkel aircraft that released the guided bomb that sank the Rohna was a soldier by the name of August Wameke. Clarke confirmed by Senate as new BLM head The UR. Senate has confirmed Kathleen Clarke, former director of Utah's Department of Natural Resources, as the new director for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), an agency in the Department of the Interior. Interior Secretary Gale Norton praised Clarkes appointment. Kathleen Clarke brings a highly successful record of innovative public lands management to the BLM, Norton said. Her background and experience will be tremendous assets in addressing natural resource issues and providing policy direction to this important agency. Clarke will be responsible for overseeing 2,662 million surface acres of d land located primarily in the West, more than 700 million acres of mineral estate across the nation, a budget of about $1.8 billion, and the agency's 9,000 employees.
