The swim season started a month early this year to accommodate the Olympics. Competitors included Union, Uintah and Granite Schools. Cougar Alex Hatch finished third in the 200 yard freestyle at 2:58.85. Sidney Swain did the 50yard freestyle in a fast 37.32. The competitive rivalry between Union teammates Laura Wight and Hatch continued in the 100 yard freestyle. Wight got out fast and was first at the turn by an artn length ahead ofHatch. Hatch overtook Wight on the second length and held first place solidly when Wight had a bad flip turn. Hatch didnt give up and gave it all she had but Hatch wasnt going to yield. The girls came to Hie k wall and it was too close to call. The pool area was roaring with cheers in support of both girls. The Union swimmers were only separated by 1100 of a second.
