Show Duchesne Grand Marshalls... Elmer and Arwella Moon The community of Duchesne is honored to have Elmer and Arwella Moon represent them as grand marshalls in the Duchesne County Fair Parade. Elmer is a native of the Uintah harvest with friends, served in her church, and been a good CONTtrUED was to try to pay for the family farm during those years. However, Luella recalls that even though no erne had any money, at least on the farm they always had plenty of food to eat. "Our family rode the two miles to church in a wagon or sleigh." says Luella. Both Ormon and Luella say that one of the most valuable lessons they were taught by their parents was to be honest and as business owners, they tried to do just that Ormon also remembers that his father taught him to take his responsibilities seriously. He must have learned that lesson well because Luella says that one of the things she most appreciates about her husband is the way he always worked long hours to provide for his family. Luella also uses the words honest, dean, and courteous to describe Ormon. And Ormon says that the thing he appreciates most about his wife is her kindness and her willingness to serve others. Among other things, Luella has cooked for missionaries, shared her garden it neighbor. The Sullivans are no strangers to hard work, and the fact that they have received the Salt Lake Tribune's City Beautification Award for more than ten years for their efforts in cleaning up vacant property around town and keeping their own home and lawn beautiful attests to that fact In addition to beautifying his community, Ormon has served in the U. S. Armed Forces, as president of UBIC, and as a director for the Chamber of Commerce. . Together Ormon and Luella Sullivan have raised eight children, and now they get to enjoy their 40 grandchildren and Now 23 that they are retired, Ormon hopes to do some fishing, flying, reading, and gardening while Luella wants to sew, quilt, and cook. The Sullivans say that they have high hopes for the Uintah Basin... Luella hopes that we will soon have less violence and a drug-frcounty and Ormon would like to see a more prosperous economy so that there will be god jobs available for those who desire to live here. Both of them plan to continue to serve in their church and in their community, and spend more time with their family members. ee . Basin, having grown up in the Tabiona and Hanna areas, and Arwella grew up in El Paso, Texas. The Moons have made their home in Duchesne for 61 years, since they were married in 1939. The son of Heber and Etta Moon, Elmer is one of seven children. Growing up, he remembers that even though his family was poverty stricken, so was everyone else. "We didn't really have any more struggles than anyone else," said Elmer. "We worked hard and my father taught me to get up early." Arwella is the daughter of Arwell and Maiy Pierce, and she is one of six children. Arwell Pierce owned a sawmill and lumberyard in Juarez, Mexico, and the family lived across the border in El Paso. "We might have been poor," recalls Arwella, "but we didn't mind because everyone else was poor too." "My parents were very strong in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Da- y Saints," continued Amelia. "The most important lesson they taught me was an understanding of the gospel." Amelia's father was the only Mormon bishop in their community for 25 years and her mother was the Relief Society president for 24 years.
