Maradamia, pistachios and chestnuts are typically brought in from warm climates in tropical locations. "Still, you can grow some pretty ' nuts in Utah, says Jerry wMMspeed, Utah State University Extension horticulturist. One of my favorites is the filbert or hazelnut. This nut can be grown as a shrub ora medium-size- d tree. It is easier to grow as a shrub because it takes less worjk and pruning. Growing a good crop of nuts requires two different varieties so they can cross pollinate, he says. Like most plants, they thrive in a organic rich soil but are actually very adaptable to most growing conditions. They require very little, if any, extra fertilization and deep, infrequent water. The largest nut tree we can grow is the walnut, Goods peed says. Both black and English walnuta thrive and produce great fruit in our area. The trees themselves can reach heights over 70 feet. Walnut trees' need a d location, a good nitrogen fertilization every spring and regular watering to produce better well-draine- d, well-draine- nuts. The nuts usually begin to drop in the late fall, he says. Harvesting can be accelerated by shaking the branches to knock the nuts off the . r. Ml tree. Remove the hulls oa soon as possible. Many of the hulls will split as the nuts drop. Wash hulled nuts to remove the tannin, and let them dry in the Bun or spread them out in acool, dry location, turning them occasion- ally to promote uniform drying. Once the nut is dry it should easily crack. They can be stored in their shells for several months. Once they are shelled, either freeze them or store them in the refrigerator for several weeks. "A few brave souls grow almonds in our area, Goods peed says. "The trees survive our climate just fine, but nut production can be sporadic at best, due in part to their early blooming date. The years we miss a late d, frost and have a long summer they produce great fruit Like filberts, almonds require so two different almond varieties must be p lan ted for optimal production, he explains. They do best in a well --drained, acidic soil. They do not like heavy soils and can suffer from iron chlorosis in wet, alkaline soils. Shake the fruit off ofthe branches when the hulls start to crack open. Once harvested, remove the hulls completely and dry the nuts. Although the southern end of our Btatehasareputation for growing pecans, they can be grown here in the north, too, he says. Like almonds, they only produce once every few years. They need a long hot growing season. The trees can adapt to many different soils but prefer it to be deeply fertile. Harvest and treat the nuts like you would walnuts. grow-ingperio- cross-pollinatio- n, Even after the holidays are gone, your poinsettiaa dont have to be. With a little care, they can still brighten upyour home for months to come . Or ifyou prefer, you can let the and plant die about gA a new one for the next holiday season. Poinsettias are native Mexican plants. They love the holiday season because they are short-da- y plants that require long nights to launch their color change. The colorful bracts oftlieseplants are leaves, not flowers, with the most common bract color beingred. The flower buds are the red mid-Februa- ry mid-Jul- y or green buttons in the center of the bracts that open to a small yellow flower. Healthy poinsettias have dark green leaves below the bracts and foliage all the way to the base. Poinsettiaa are named after Joel Roberts Poinsett, who was the first ambassador from America to Mexico. He was a great ambassadorbut is beet remembered for bringing the point settia plant hack to his home in South Carolina in 1828. He had a greenhouse there and began growing and ia . givingthe plant to friends and neigh- bors. The poinsettias became popular, and many people began seeking their beautiful color for the Christmas season. Consider these tipe to keep your poinsettia healthy and bright. 'Poinsettias need a minimum of six hours ofindirect sunlight each day. .'Protect the plants from freezing temperatures, especially when transporting them. Place them in a light-fille- d roomawayfromdrafts. They do beet in rooms between 65 and 65 degrees at night and 65 to 70 degrees during the day. Avoid exposing the plant to temperatures below 50 degrees F. 'Water poinsettiaa when the Boil is dry 2 to 3 inches down.
