( Photo by Lurinda Gines) g, Your children will enjoy making these "Turkey "TURKEY CHILD Child" crafts. Be creative and maybe make "Turkey Moms and "Turkey Dads to decorate your home this Thanksgiving season. The Craft Corner has another "hand craft to make. The Spooky Spider children hand decoration wu the Craft Comers weekly craft one numth ago. As I planned this weeks craft I wondered why I make so many holiday decorations revolving around a childs hand. Then I realized why: I marvel at my children each and every day. And. when a special occasion is celebrated, such as a holiday, I like to have something more tangible than a photo. It's a 'moment in time to link me to my most precious of things, my children. I'm in awe of their hands they immediately take me back in time to the very first moment that I held their hand in mine. It was a bolt of energy to a lifetime of hand holding, hugs and love from such a wee one. It is your first promise sealed with a hand shake, (so to speak) A promise filled with trust, love and years to fill it with traditions. So again I offer another family craft activity to decorate your home and establish a tradition of making holiday decorations together. u Turkey Child Material Needed: Small Terra Cotta Pots (equal to Brown Craft Paint .. PaintBrush ", of children) . ... ' . A special week of training in the arts of drumming, rhythm, and timing came to the students and teachers at Altamont as the result of a lucky draw last summer. Jeneal Witbeck, a second-grad- e teacher at AES, isoften referred to by her fellow teachers ss our talented artist in residence. Whether it be painting, drawing, building sculpting, paper-foldingingerbread houses, or numerous other techniques, Jeneal is an expert, and she carefully shares her &ills with others. Last June at a Utah Arts Council summer retreat, Mrs. Witbeck received asadoor prize the opportunity to have a resident artist coma to school for a week. At no coet to the school, the artist would conduct training in his area of expertise. Mr. Witbeck chose percussionist George Grant, who offered a skill which she felt Altamont students needed. The Utah Arts Council conducts an "Artists in Residence program wherein working artists who are outstanding in their fields are paid to work in a particular school, teaching students and faculty to work in the artists techniques. George Grant is a performer and recording artist. He has worked with artists m many areas and in foreign countries, including India and Afghanistan. Through assemblies, sessions, and classroom instruction, and using a variety of different and unusual percussion instruments. Mr. Grant gave students and teachers training and practice in rhythm and timing. His theory is that such practice helps develop the parte of the brain which set and coordinate timing, and that it helps students use their minds to their full capacity. Ha say it is not about who will be a great performer or drummer. It is about using all eight parts of the brain to a persons best advantage. The children have greatly etyoyed the experience of working with this talented artist, and several teachers have already observed an improvement in coordination and focus. Mr. Grant will exchange video tapes with the school during the coining year in order to help facilitate and expand the program. .
