Show t UNTAHifASIS STANDARD. Ju!v 1 8. 2000- - Pace 1? High School Baseball Teams show up as Roosevelt defeats Park City, Rangely JH& ,s " i 4 ;. By Aldon Rachele Vr v! ' W& V V4 :f& In the second game Roosevelt scored one run in the first and that was it. Park City produced three in the first and one in the third. Roosevelt's Fieldsted singled, stole e kit sent second and Weny' him home. Roosevelt dropped a wild 12-1-1 game to Rangely and then won the second game, which was just as offensively exciting, There were a lot ofextra base hits vs. Rangely. We had a big five-ru- Roosevelt high school baseball team keep having games cancelled out on them with Helper, Emery and Moffat County pulling out ofcontests for some reason or another, but the local bunch did have some teams showupover the last two weeks. They split with Rangely and Park City in away games. The Roosevelt nine buried the Miners in Park City, 10-- and then in dropped the second contest, Park City, Thursday. Sterling Mare was the winning pitcher, who allowed just five hits, which didn't cause any damage according to Roosevelt coach Brent Fieldsted. Roosevelt started the game off wit h one run in the first inning. Jesse t leldsted was walked, stole second and then came home on Corey Roberts' single. The Roosevelt team added three more counters in the third. Two walks and an error loaded up the bases and Joel Dubrays single got by the center fielder to drive in all three. Matt Weny led off with a triple in the fifth, and then errors, a walk, sacrifice fly, fielder's choice played a part in Roosevelt pumping in three more runs. Roberta and Weny scored in the sixth. Both singled, and were walked in for two more runs. one-bas- 12-1- 1, iL 4-- vcl l recently won the girls 14 and under state softball championship. 'rzexim Tsumiifttii) i Back in 1968, girls sports was more of a club thing to do. and while checking out my Roosevelt Junior High School yearbook I spotted a photo of the 9th grade girls' basketball team. Plqyereon the team were LaRayma Freston, Frances Jones, Amy Cbyburn (love the hairdo-196- 0's style-f- ar out), Francine Conetah, Joann Myore, Michelle Monks, Loidesn Zagrr. Ilf I'm wrong on the name, blame the yearbook staff.) Other members werw-Tau- dy Kow albs (Her father. Calvin is an eye doctor, and so she had to have two good eyes for shooting baskets.). Mikelene Eldredge (Her dad. Burr coached the boys, but Bonnie Rae Fsusett was in charge of the girls), Leslie Hannston, Cynthia Dennis, Susan Sorenson. Kathleen Bergquist, Karen Nielsen, Sheryl Lemon, Mary Harding, Valerie Squire. Inever dreamed in 1968 that girls sports would be such a Big Thingthat it is today. The idea of the WNBA, a basketball league for women, wasn't a thought in my brain. This is probably a sexist comment, but back then l just thought the girl looked cute in their shorts. I didnt really care if they could dribble or put a shot through the bucket In 1968 1 was s junior high wrestler along with such guys as Danny Lamb,Jamm Lloyd. Carl VanTasecll. Jet Abeggien. Charles Clark. Ray Dillman, Arvin Winterton. 1 battled Lamb for a spot on the main team, but Lamb was always cooking on the mat. I never could beat him. My only chores was to volunteer to com pete at 136 pound, which was a few weight 120 pound cat; classes up from my egory (Believe It or Not!). However, my greatest accomplishment wasn't gained on the mat I was the tallest wrestler, and one day Coach Eldredge said, How come you aren't trying out for the basketball team?". I was impressed, and gave a great answer of: 1 dont know? 1 guess 1 should have told him I had this little problem of dribbling the basket balL Getting back to the girls, 1 began writing sports stories as a professional in 1975, and I made the mistake of not knowing that the Utes won the state soft ball championship. JoAnn Cowan, a female sports supporter, almost stampeded me. After that I never forgot to check out the girls with the eyes and the pen. Basketball is big news st Union High School and it haa been a job keeping track of all those Nielsen, Nielson, Nelson, Neilson, Neilsen names. Sometimes it is more exciting to watch the girls, who have won several championships at Union with the first one in the 1960s and second in the 1990a. I've taken more photos than Dennis Rodman ear rings, tattoos, and John Rocker rude comments. Myall-imfavorite shot is one of Vernal football player Rick Morton flying through the air on a TD catch. Another one 1 like is one I took at ayouth baseball game where Green River had a first baseman built like an offensive lineman. He was reaching out to catch the ball while trying not to flatten a little Altamont female player below. (He missed her.) One photo was s two-paer. 1 clicked one shot at a basketball game, rewound it and put it back in the camera, which I used to cover a rodeo. The GnaJ result is a double exposure shot ofJodene Merkiey dribbling the ball during a bull riding event I bet she is glad it didn't happen for real or 1 might have gotten lassoed out of action. m rt ent obstacles, with each one increasing its degree of difficulty, according to Joni Smith. Rocks will be placed up and down the course as well as items that tip the jeep slightly, said L. Smith. npetitors are given points for infractions such asstopping, backing up, running over flags (contestants are required to race between them), etc. The person with the lowest prnnt total wins the event like in golf and crosscountry. Each obstacles will be named, but some are still untitled. Club officials w ant dinosaur names for the remaining obstacles and soacon test is being held. Roosevelt scored nine of iu runs in the first inning during us second game, 1 0 win. The Roosevelt team batted around with Weny having two hits in tha inning, a triple and single. Chris Oakes and Mikr Set-leripped out doubles. 7. Walker Evans, one of the best offroad racers in the world, competed at a recent trail ride that was held near Vernal, and is expected to attend the Duchesne County event.
