Show J f T U3IAH Buck deer applications due no later than 5 p.m. May 22 Utah's 2000 general buck deer application period iaunderway, with applications due no later than 5 p.m., May 22. Those applying can look forward to good deer numbers through most of the state this fall, as a mild, warm winter, with little snow pack, should result in good adult ana fawn deer survival. Judi Tutorow, wildlife licensing coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources, has two suggestions for those pondering whether they should apply in the drew. "Apply in the May 122 draw and complete your application correctly," she said. Tutorow is concerned that many hunters may believe its only necessary to apply if they want a permit for the popular Southern Region. What many hunters don't realise is that permits for all of Utah's five regions have oversold almost every year since 1995. That was one year after Utah capped the number of general buck deer permits at 97,000. The Southern Region has received the attention, though, because demand for its permits has been greatest and they've sold out the quick- est Is the overselling of permits for almost all of the Division's regions since 1995 an indication that all of the 2000 permits will be taken by hunters through the draw? "We dont know for sure, Tutorow said. "It's anybody's guess." One thing that is certain is that hunters will not be able to visit li cense agents to buy any permits not issued in the draw. To nelp control the selling of any permits that remain after the draw, they will be sold only by the Division beginning July 10. his means hunters who want them may have to travel long distances to reach a Division office and may find themselves standing in a long line. "I'd like to encourage sportsmen to apply in the draw if they want a ermit for a specific region," itorow said. "By applying, you don't have to leave your home to obtain a permit and, if youre successful in the draw, you'll receive your permit in the mail." Department of Natural Resources - Division of Wildlife Resources - 1596 West North Tem Is Salt Lake City, UT 84116 Before mailing their application, Tutorow advises hunters to assure its completed correctly. An instruction sheet was included with preprinted applications many hunters received in the mail. Instructions also are found on page 8 of the 2000 Utah Big Game Proclamation. The short time period between the May 22 dose of the application period and posting of the draw results July S, coupled with the number of applications that may be received, makes it unlikely that the Division can offer hunters an application correction period. fol. "They really, really need to low the instructions closely, Tutorow said of those who apply. "They neon to call and ask questions," aha said. They may want to take their application to a Division office and have someone look over it. They want to be absolutely sure that it's accurate because they may not " get a chance to correct To help assure their application is completed correctly, Tutorow provides hunters the following remind-er- s: W" hunters must epply on their own application. "Do not apply us- ing the photocopy of another hunter's preprinted application, or will be rejected," Wildlife Habitat Authorization num- ber on their application or indude an extra $6 so one may be purchased for them, if theyre successful in Some minor modifications to the Division of Wildlife Reeources Strategic Plan: 1 998 2003, Phase I were mads to tha plan before the Utah Wildlife Board approved it at its April 20 meeting in Salt Lake City.
