Are you on-li- ne By Amanda Jenkins In today's fast-pace- d technologi- es world, computer are a part of everyday life. It ia estimated that over 57 million people um the Internet, and 85 percent of thoee uae it on a daily basis. Over 61 percent of malea repented using a computer at least once a week, while only 38.5 percent ofwomen reported uaing a computer on a weekly baaia. Our aociety haa become oo technologically advanced that even banking transactiona are taking place over the Internet We asked a few local citizens how often they uae computers, and what significance those computers play in their lives. Most people contacted in our informal survey said they use computers on a regular basis for leisure as well aa for work. COMPUTER WISE STRESS Stcffani Jensen sum that she uses computers everyday for academic purposes as and browsing, well as for RELIEVER-Dcb- bie Leatham EVERYDAY USER-Je- an says that as a cashier at I.F.A. she uses computers on a daily basis. She is also planning on purchasing a computet for a home business. Jenkins uses her computer to play solitaire w hen she has had a stressful day at work. Basins historical lore makes for g horror stories i spine-tinglin- The most frightening stories told around campfiraeat night come from local legends retold from generation to generation. Some of these terrifying tales have been recorded by Alumont High etudenU in a publication entitled Memoirs of the Once Silent Uintah Mountains, printed in 1996. The publication ia a compilation of ancestral stories, legends and myths from tho lives of the first homesteading pioneers who entered the Uintah Baiun. The stories were gathered by studenU of Altamont High under the direction of English instructor Donna Barton. g Eryoy a few of these local talas and feel free to pass on -lore whenever you want to Spook someone. hair-raisin- The Blue Lantern By Steuen Bingham Hyrum Duncan was a middle-age- d miner in the Uintah Mounman tains. He was an average-aise- d with fins features and dark hair. Hyrrurn was a pleasant man to bo around and work with. Ha was a very hard worker, yet helpful and d. His partners spoke highly of him, for he was well bked. . attention to the creaking. As ha turned around and lifted hia hands to hang the lantern near the roof, the braces suddenly broke. The men nn outside, yelling for Hyrum to follow. The waited for Hyrum to come stumbling out Time passed, but then was no sign of him. Digging and pushing their way in, they went to the spot when he should have been. They cleared the pot and looked around even farther. The men sat down, and one old man looked up nt the walL On the wall was the word HYRUM written ia Mood. They could not find his body anywhere, and they never found another trace of him. Some people say that lonely old Hyrum is sbll wandering around tho Uinta Baaia looking for gold. Ho ia only seen on the darkeet nights. You can recognise him by the blue lantern swinging back and forth aa he eearchee. But, if you see this moving blue lantern.do not stare at it Because if Hyrum aeee you sUr-- I ing at hia lantern, he will came to your house, and all that will bo left of you will be your name written in blood, just as Hyrum was. Big Foot high-spirite- Hyrum worked all over the Uintah Mountains, mining and panning. In the later yean ofhis life he quit penning because of little or no luck. But he faithfully stuck with mining every day of hu life. One day aa Hyram and his partners went into a drafty, cold, dirty mine, then wen odd squeaks and rattles. Since Hyrum was the fint one in the mine, he was the one farthest inside. He didnl pay any Jemmy Bristol Hey Josh, said Fred, eager to go home. It's getting late; letTs call it a day Yeah.
