'sz&xwis by AUon Rachele I've covered the Dinoaaur Roundup Rodeo since 1975 and while the main action ie inside the arena sometimes there are some note worthy activities on the sidelines. It seems the rodeo fence is a major concern to security officials every year. A fence cop in 1998 said, Are you going to stand by the fence fer a long bmeri answered, 1 have a press pass to photograph the rodeo. The reply was: 'The kids see you there and they want to do the same. We arrived at an agreeable decision. 1 was allowed to remain at my position until it got dark. 1 photographed the bareback brone riders then took a couple of shots of the calf roper. The sun went home and this son of Orlie and Annie Rachel took a seat. This year photographic territory wasn't a concern, but the fence police were still busy. The 1999 theme was: "DonT Touch The Fence." I didn't want to be a problem, and so I obeyed. Photographers do a great deal of their work standing up and it seemed kind ofawkward with nothing to lean on. One time 1 slipped and put my hand on the fence. I looked to the left through the corner of my eye and saw one of the fence posse needing my way. He laughed when I said, "Oops and removed my hand before he nabbed ms. A cowboy by the name of Tom Reeve waa driven into the fence by his mount and 1 thought I heard someone say, Don't Touch The Fence. He went head first over the fence and almost landed in a fan's lap. How's that for rodeo action that is up close and peraonal. The next day fence touching was pretty much ignored. A policewoman was mors concerned about finding the mother of a cowboy hat wearing d little boy. The two were in search of mom. Finally, mom was found, and little boy had a brand new friend. Moat people go to a rodeo and watch the cowboy, cowgirl, downs, but I also check out the photographers to sec what positions they take their pictures from and what they do when a bucking brone or wild bull is heading their way. One photographer at the Dino-- saur Roundup Rodeo was a brave soul. He stationed himaelf inside the arena, and was prepared with a holster-typbelt for lenses, film, etc. that he wrapped around his waist, and pads for all that e kneeing-down-in-the-di- rt work. He was able to climb the fence in quick fashion to avoid any bulL 1 was a superman photographer years ago, who figured that bulla and bronca would bounce off my invisible shield, but one year I discovered I was mortaL 1 took a picture of a charging horse and before 1 could scale the fence like epidennan or batman it stomped all over mo.
