Show Basin LIFE July 6. 199?- - Va&L 13 1 Uintah Basin Standard Huge cross memorializes UHP pilot Sgt. Doyle Thorne Out in th windy highlands east of Current Creek at the view area overlooking fertile farm land and red racks stands a huge white cross memorialising a fallen Utah High way Patrol pilot. Friends, family and fellow officers of UHP Sgt. Doyle Thorne gathered at noon Friday, June 25, to unveil a large cross erected adjacent the view area on Highway 40 at Current Creek. A UHP helicopter was flown in and parked on one side of the cross. Two somber rows of troopers flanked the other aide of the cross. Fellow officers gave memorial speec kes about tha man who died in a helicopter crash while lookgirl lost in the ing for a Strawberry Reservoir area. "We were like brothers; he was someone to talk to, an ear to bend, said UHP Lt. Brent Munson. He was quiet and unassumingand...his two-year-o- ld family came first, he was very dedicated to his family. His legacy will live with us forever. UHPCol. Richard Green wood recalled flights with Thorne prior to the search for a Snowflake, Arizona child on the evening of July 30, 1994. He said that as soon as Doyle heard about the search he offered to help out. T hope as the motoring public travels do the road and sees this magnificent monument, thev will appreciate from all over the state combing the area until the afternoon of Aug. 2. when National Guard spotted the crashed helicopter. A veteran of the Utah Highway Patrol, Sgt. Thome worked for several years in the Uintah Ba-ai- n before transferring to the HIP Aero Bureau.
