White started six games at guard as a freshman last season for the University of Utah, which were all victories, according to Coach Busenbark. "It was difficult going from high school to college ball. Everyone on the college level is quicker, stronger and foster. Speed is just doubled. Out of season rule adopted for sports Recently the Board of Trustee of the Utah High School Activities Association adopted the Out ofSea-so- n Participation Rule which further clarified rules regarding participation during the three week period prior to the start date for each sport. "This change goes a long way in clearing up confusion which existed under the old rule, said Evan Excell, Executive Director of theUtah High School Activities Association. "The adjustment of this rule is intended to give dedicated times where coaches and athletes can choose other activities, said Excell. The rule also attempts to create a more level ' playing field for all schools. The policy is to be implemented immediately for the 1998-9- 9 school year. There will be four weeks dead time following the championship game in that classification and gender (summer not to be affected) in football, volleyball, basketball, soccer, baseball and softball. Boys soccer, baseball and softball will begin four week dead their after-seastime during August at the beginning ofthe last starting date for fall sports (volleyball and football start dates). There will also be two additional four week dead times during the year. The blocks may be consecutive. Individual sports: golf, tennis, cross country, wrestling and track will have three 4 week dead times during the year. 2, ed. I'm hoping for good things for this upcoming season. White was graduated from Union High School in 1997. He was a member of Unions state championship team as a freshman in 1993 along with Utah teammate, Wilson. White was also a member of Union's wrestling team where he placed second in 1997. Hie number one job ofa lineman is to protect his quarterback and provide holes for his runningbacks with super blocks. "They don't notice you when you are doing okay. You would like to' forget the blocks you miss, but the coaches wont let you, White said. 1 worked with the linemen at the Union Camp and showed them what I learned. Crosswhite shared the starting quarterback position with Darnell Arceneaux in 1997. They combined to complete 174 out of 299 passes for 2,204 yards and 13 touchdowns. Crosswhite opened the season as the starting quarterback, but Arceneaux gained the signal call-- , ing job for the last two games, which included a victory over BYU. Going into the 1997 season, Arceneaux is listed as the No. 1 quarterback with Crosswhite, who l . 'Ill' i i j u. v . ' n j.ii Saturday, August h 7:00 I a LIW"! 1. ... nm tc 5--k if j. ?th A.M. We are battling to see who is the top quarterback, said Crosswhite, who was reminded by White that Arceneaux is first string. Crosswhite commented that the victory over Louisville is the game that stands out for him from last season because it was a chance to play against a team from back Edht after playing schools mainly in the Western United States. "They play Big Time football out there, he said. We didnt have a great turnout at our two camps, (4th-8tbut not too bad. Im glad we have kids interested in football. We have been working on techniques with the young athletes and trying to get them to develop good football habits. Stressing fundamentals was the main focus, said Coach Busenbark, who added that football practice for the 1998 season at Union will begin Monday, August 3 at 7 h, 9th-12t- h) . a.m. We will spend a week in shorts and then put full pads on, August 10. The Black and Gold Scrimmage is set for August 22 at 9 a.m., Busenbark commented. The Cougars will open the season at home, August 28 against destate champion, Morfending gan, which has lost a good number of players from last year. Union will have its homecoming game against Carbon, September 4, and then will battle Ben Lomond in an away game the following week. Carbon, Park City and Lehi will have new coaches, but I think the teams to beat for the region title will be Uintah, Lehi and us (Union). This year a team will have to finish in the top two to go to the state playoffs," Coach Busenbark aaid. I think we have a good chance with the athletes we have coming back. Rick Rasmussen should be at the quarterback position. Other players with varsity experience back from last season should be Bo Gardner, Preston Marx, Chax Frandsen, Dirk Olsen. We also have Brad White returning and others, who played some varsity ball. Coach Busenbark added, Tm looking for great things from our team. 1998 GamePlan College Football Magazine predicted that the University of Utah football team will have a successful season that will include challenging for the Western Athletic Conference title. The magazine said, Anyone planning to take the Utes lightly this season should have their heads examined. This team is loaded with veteran performers and Head Coach Ron McBride has reaped a recruiting harvest thats straight out ofthe com belt! Which is why we believe that Utah is primed to make a lot of noise in the WAC. Former Union and Northridge High School football star, Brandon Dart, is also a member of the Utah football team.
